Heinrich Hlasiwetz
Heinrich Hlasiwetz (7 April 1825 – 7 October 1875) was an Austrian chemist born in Reichenberg, Bohemia. Son of a pharmacist, he studied at the University of Jena, where his instructors included Johann Wolfgang Döbereiner (1780-1849), Heinrich Wilhelm Ferdinand Wackenroder (1798-1854) and Matthias Jakob Schleiden (1804-1881). Later he studied under Josef Redtenbacher (1810–1870) in Prague. In 1848 he earned the diploma of ''Magister Pharmacia'', and during the following year received his doctorate in chemistry. In 1849 he began work as an assistant to Friedrich Rochleder (1819-1874), later becoming an associate professor of chemistry at the University of Innsbruck (1854). In 1867 he became a professor at the Vienna University of Technology, where from 1869 he represented general and analytical chemistry. Friedrich Rochleder
Friedrich Rochleder (15 May 1819 – 5 November 1874) was an Austrian chemist born in Vienna. Son of pharmacist Anton Rochleder, he studied medicine at the University of Vienna, earning his doctorate in 1842. Afterwards he studied chemistry in Giessen with Justus von Liebig (1803-1873), followed by several months spent in Paris and London. In 1845 he was appointed professor of technical chemistry at the newly founded technical academy in Lviv. Later he served as professor of chemistry at Charles University in Prague (1849), and professor of general and pharmaceutical chemistry at the University of Vienna (1870). In 1848 he became a full member of the Academy of Sciences in Vienna. ''Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie'' (ADB, german: Universal German Biography) is one of the most important and comprehensive biographical reference works in the German language. It was published by the Historical Commission of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences between 1875 and 1912 in 56 volumes, printed in Leipzig by Duncker & Humblot. The ADB contains biographies of about 26,500 people who died before 1900 and lived in the German language Sprachraum of their time, including people from the Netherlands before 1648. Its successor, the '' Neue Deutsche Biographie'', was started in 1953 and is planned to be finished in 2023. Creosote is a category of carbonaceous chemicals formed by the distillation of various tars and pyrolysis of plant-derived material, such as wood or fossil fuel. They are typically used as preservatives or antiseptics. Resorcinol (or resorcin) is an organic compound with the formula C6H4(OH)2. It is one of three isomeric benzenediols, the 1,3-isomer (or '' meta''-isomer). Resorcinol crystallizes from benzene as colorless needles that are readily soluble in water, alcohol, and ether, but insoluble in chloroform and carbon disulfide. Phloroglucinol is an organic compound with the formula C6H3(OH)3. It is a colorless solid. It is used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and explosives. Tannins (or tannoids) are a class of astringent, polyphenolic biomolecules that bind to and precipitate proteins and various other organic compounds including amino acids and alkaloids.
