''Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing'' is the debut studio album by Canadian extreme metal band Strapping Young Lad. It was released on April 4, 1995. Century Media Europe released a remastered version of the album on June 12, 2006, which includes the video for "S.Y.L.", several bonus tracks, and a 12-page booklet containing extended liner notes. Background Strapping Young Lad began in 1994 as a solo project of Canadian musician Devin Townsend. Following his work as vocalist on Steve Vai's 1993 album ''Sex & Religion'' and its 1994 tour, Townsend believed he had been a "musical whore", spending "the first five years of iscareer working at the behest of other people". During a brief stint as touring guitarist for The Wildhearts, Townsend received a phone call from an A&R representative for Roadrunner Records, expressing an interest in his demos and an intention to sign him. Strapping Young Lad
Strapping Young Lad was a Canadian extreme metal band formed by Devin Townsend in Vancouver in 1994. The band started as a one-man studio project; Townsend played most of the instruments on the 1995 debut album, ''Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing''. By 1997, he had recruited permanent members; this line-up, which consisted of Townsend on vocals and guitar, Jed Simon on guitar, Byron Stroud on bass, and Gene Hoglan on drums, lasted until the band's dissolution. Jed Simon
Jedson Louis Simon (born February 27, 1964) is a Canadian musician. He was a member of supergroup Scar the Martyr and has been a member of numerous metal bands, including Front Line Assembly, Strapping Young Lad, Zimmers Hole, and TENET. He is currently a member of VIMIC. Biography Simon was born on February 27, 1964 in Victoria, British Columbia. He gained attention in the metal community with his third speed metal band Armoros, which was founded in 1985. Armoros disbanded in 1989 after two successful demos and an album. Simon's next band was Caustic Thought, when his career with Byron Stroud began. Simon did three demos with Caustic Thought, and when he left them, he gave the job to Devin Townsend. Judas Priest
Judas Priest are an English heavy metal band formed in Birmingham in 1969. They have sold over 50 million albums and are frequently ranked as one of the greatest metal bands of all time. Glenn Raymond Tipton (born 25 October 1947) is an English guitarist. Often noted for his complex playing style and classically influenced solos, he is best known as one of the lead guitarists for heavy metal band Judas Priest. Early life and career Tipton was born on 25 October 1947, in Blackheath, Staffordshire, to Olive and Doug Tipton. He attended Olive Hill Primary School when he was about five years old. His brother, Gary, was a guitar player for a local band called the Atlantics. Early on, Tipton was taught to play the piano by his mother. Tipton learned to play guitar at age 19 with his first guitar being a Hofner acoustic guitar. He would then play on a Rickenbacker until he was able to afford a Fender Stratocaster. "Exciter" is a song by English heavy metal band Judas Priest from their 1978 album ''Stained Class''. It is the opening track and is an early example of speed metal. According to former guitarist K.K. Downing their drummer Les Binks accidentally came up with the drum intro for the song at a soundcheck on their ''Sin After Sin'' tour. Canadian heavy metal band Exciter took its name from this song. 1990 trial During the 1990 civil action brought against the band, "Exciter" was played backwards to the court. Adrian White (musician)
Adrian White is a Canadian drummer. In 1994, White played drums on the first album from Devin Townsend's newly founded Strapping Young Lad Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing as well as co writing and demo recording the majority of Strapping Young Lad City. Shortly after he toured with Front Line Assembly (FLA) on the Hard Wired Tour in 1995–96 recording the Live Wired concert tour video and album. In 2000, Adrian rejoined FLA for more touring in Europe and the WGT Festival leaving the band in 2006 after the Artificial Soldier tour. In 2003 he pulled double duty, joining FLA side-projects Delerium and Conjure One for a sold-out North American tour. On 17 December 2010, Reset announced the return of Adrian White with the band at the same time they announced a concert to celebrate its 15th year of existence.
