'' Smash'' is an American musical-drama television series created by playwright Theresa Rebeck. It premiered in the United States on NBC on February 6, 2012. The series revolves around a fictional New York theater community making new Broadway musicals. In the first season, the focus was on the making of ''Bombshell'', a musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. In the second season, the show was split between taking ''Bombshell'' to Broadway and the creation and mounting of a contemporary pop musical called '' Hit List'' that was about the price of fame. Other fictional musicals that were touched on for which original songs were performed include ''Beautiful'' and ''Liaisons''. A few of the songs were written for events outside of the aforementioned musicals. Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman wrote all but one of the songs in the first season. Kathryn Lee Gifford (née Epstein; born August 16, 1953) is an American television presenter, singer, songwriter, actress and author. From 1985 to 2000, she and Regis Philbin hosted the talk show ''Live! with Regis and Kathie Lee''. "The Transfer" is the thirtieth episode of the American television series '' Smash''. It was written by Justin Brenneman and Julia Brownell and directed by Holly Dale. The episode premiered on NBC on May 11, 2013, the fifteenth episode of Season 2. Plot The episode opens with ''Hit List'' moving to Broadway and being in previews. Karen Cartwright (Katharine McPhee) sings "Pretender" in a ''Hit List'' number as Amanda's alter ego "Nina" performs for Sam Strickland's (Leslie Odom, Jr) manager character, who "Nina" is trying to get to be her manager. "Hell on Earth" is the ninth episode of the American television series, '' Smash''. The episode aired on April 2, 2012. Plot Karen (Katharine McPhee) and Ivy (Megan Hilty) both vie for an orange juice commercial, and Karen wins out, which only accentuates how unhappy Ivy is at having to go back to the ensemble of Heaven on Earth. Sam (Leslie Odom, Jr.) shows concern for how many pills Ivy's taking, but she brushes it off as simply part of taking Prednisone. But Ivy takes more and more pills to deal with life, leading her to be high while performing Heaven on Earth, and after falling down from her buzz, get kicked off the stage by the lead. Karen sees the performance while trying to return the sunglasses she accidentally swapped with Ivy at the orange juice audition, and after yelling at each other, the pair end up drinking together and bonding. "Publicity" is the twelfth episode of the American television series, '' Smash''. The episode aired on April 23, 2012. Plot Derek (Jack Davenport) tells Karen (Katharine McPhee) he wishes she was Marilyn; Ellis (Jaime Cepero) overhears and tells Rebecca's (Uma Thurman) assistant, Randall.
