Healthcare in Ireland may refer to either of two healthcare systems in Ireland: *The Health Service Executive, responsible for Healthcare in the Republic of Ireland *Health and Social Care in Northern Ireland (part of the United Kingdom National Health Service) The existence of the two different systems is seen as a major obstacle to Irish unification by Social Democratic and Labour Party politicians. Health Service Executive
The Health Service Executive (HSE) ( ga, Feidhmeannacht na Seirbhíse Sláinte) is the publicly funded healthcare system in Ireland, responsible for the provision of health and personal social services. It came into operation on 1 January 2005. The current Director-General is Stephen Mulvany on an interim basis, after Paul Reid stepped down in October 2022. The public health care system is governed by the Health Act 2004, which established a new body to be responsible for providing health and personal social services to everyone living in Ireland – the Health Service Executive. Although having been created separately to the National Health Service (NHS), it is nonetheless considered a part of the overall national health service in the United Kingdom. The Northern Ireland Executive through its Department of Health is responsible for its funding, while the Public Health Agency is the executive agency responsible for the provision of public health and social care services across Northern Ireland. Colum Eastwood
Colum Eastwood (born 30 April 1983) is an Irish nationalist politician serving as Leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) since 2015. He has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Foyle since 2019, served in Northern Ireland Assembly from 2011 to 2019 and served on Derry City Council from 2005 to 2011. Declan Kearney (born 19 December 1964) is an Irish Sinn Féin politician who was elected as a member (MLA) of the Northern Ireland Assembly to represent the South Antrim constituency at the 2016 election.
