Hawkesbury River Ferries
Hawkesbury River Ferries was a ferry and cruise boat operator based at Brooklyn on the Hawkesbury River in the northern suburbs of Sydney, Australia. The company operated the Dangar Island Ferry and the widely advertised Australia's last Riverboat Postman cruise, as well as other cruises and charters. The company went into liquidation on 29 March 2012. After a period where temporary arrangements were made to keep these two services going, contracts have now been awarded to other ferry operators to continue these services on a permanent basis. The Riverboat Postman service is now being run by Hawkesbury Cruises. The Dangar Island and Little Wobby services are now being run by Banksia Ferry Charters. The Dangar Island Ferry connects Brooklyn to Dangar Island and Little Wobby Beach, both of which are communities that have no road access, and which rely entirely on river transport. The Hawkesbury River, or Hawkesbury-Nepean River, is a river located northwest of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The Hawkesbury River and its associated main tributary, the Nepean River, almost encircle the metropolitan region of Sydney. The Hawkesbury River has its origin at the confluence of the Nepean River and the Grose River, to the north of Penrith and travels for approximately in a north–easterly and then a south–easterly direction to its mouth at Broken Bay, about from the Tasman Sea. Dangar Island
Dangar Island is a forested island, in area, in the Hawkesbury River, just north of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Dangar Island is a suburb of Hornsby Shire and as at the 2016 census had a population of 303, which swells dramatically during holiday seasons. The island is serviced regularly by Brooklyn Ferry Service and departs from Brooklyn and takes about fifteen minutes. The Brooklyn ferry is itself adjacent to Hawkesbury River railway station. Little Wobby, New South Wales
Little Wobby is a suburb of the Central Coast region of New South Wales, Australia, located on the north bank of the Hawkesbury River. It is part of the local government area. It is geographically the southernmost point of the "NSW Central Coast". History Little Wobby was originally occupied by the Commonwealth Military Forces during the Second World War. Several buildings were erected along the shoreline to house artillery batteries in case of a Japanese invasion through Broken Bay and the Hawkesbury River. A submarine net was also put in place across the river. Two of these buildings still exist as dwellings, into which they were converted after the war. In the 1970s a plan was mooted for the State government to purchase all of the properties along the shore and demolish the houses in order to rehabilitate the land and return it to being part of the national park.
