Hawk Durango
''Hawk Larabee'' is an American old-time radio western. It was broadcast on CBS from July 5, 1946, until February 7, 1948. Format In his book, ''On the Air: The Encyclopedia of Old-Time Radio'', radio historian John Dunning described ''Hawk Larabee'' as "radio's first half-hearted attempt at an adult western drama, a concept that was not fully realized until the arrival of ''Gunsmoke'' five years later." Although adults listened to earlier radio westerns, such as ''The Lone Ranger'' and ''Red Ryder'', the main audience for those programs was children. Another radio historian, Jim Cox, wrote in his book, ''Say Goodnight, Gracie: The Last Years of Network Radio'', that ''Hawk Larabee'' "fell short in providing the stark realism of a grown-up narrative." Jim Cox, a retired college professor living in Louisville, Kentucky, is a leading historian on the subject of radio programming in the 20th century. He has written extensively on the history of radio from the 1920s to the present. ''Red Ryder'' was an American radio western series based on the popularity of the comic strip ''Red Ryder'' by Stephen Slesinger and Fred Harman. It debuted on February 3, 1942 on the NBC Blue NetworkCox, Jim (2008). ''This Day in Network Radio: A Daily Calendar of Births, Debuts, Cancellations and Other Events in Broadcasting History''. Elliott Lewis (November 28, 1917 – May 23, 1990) was an American actor, writer, producer and director who worked in radio and television during the twentieth century. He was known for his ability to work in these capacities across all genres during the golden age of radio, which earned him the nickname "Mr. Radio". Later in life, he wrote a series of detective novels. Early years Elliott Bruce Lewis was born in New York City, on November 28, 1917, to Julius Lewis and Anne Rabinowitz Lewis. His father was a printer. He had one younger brother, Raymond. By 1930, the family was living in Mount Vernon, New York. Lone Ranger
The Lone Ranger is a fictional masked former Texas Ranger who fought outlaws in the American Old West with his Native American friend Tonto. The character has been called an enduring icon of American culture. He first appeared in 1933 in a radio show on WXYZ (Detroit), conceived either by station owner George W. Trendle or by Fran Striker, the show's writer. Test episodes aired earlier on radio station WEBR in Buffalo. John Dunning (radio Historian)
John Dunning (born January 9, 1942) is an American writer of non-fiction and detective fiction. He is known for his reference books on old-time radio and his series of mysteries featuring Denver bookseller and ex-policeman Cliff Janeway. Life Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1942, Dunning moved to his father's hometown of Charleston, South Carolina, at the age of three. In 1964 he left his parents' home and moved to Denver, Colorado, where, after a time working as a stable hand at a horse racing track, he got a job at ''The Denver Post''. In 1970 he left the newspaper and took up writing novels, while pursuing a variety of jobs. Partly because of trouble with his publishers, in 1984 he stopped writing and opened a store specializing in second-hand and rare books called the Old Algonquin Bookstore.
