Havre station is a train station, re-fueling, and service stop for the Amtrak ''Empire Builder'' in Havre, Montana. The station, platform, and parking are owned by BNSF Railway, and the station was previously owned and operated by the Great Northern Railway On static display, next to the station, is Great Northern Railway steam locomotive #2584, a 4-8-4 "Northern" type S-2 Class, which served the station while it was in passenger service. It has been on display there since May 15, 1964. Nearby is a sculpture representing "U.S. – Canada Friendship" and a statue of James J. Havre ( ) is the county seat and largest city in Hill County, Montana, United States. Havre is nicknamed the crown jewel of the Hi-Line. It is said to be named after the city of Le Havre in France. As of the 2020 census the population was 9,362. History Havre was incorporated in north-central Montana on 5 September 1893. In August 1893, twenty-six people voted to incorporate Havre as a city on September 5 of that year. The townsite was platted south of the railroad tracks on parts of Descelles’ and Simon Pepin’s ranches. The Great Northern S-2 was a class of 14 4-8-4 "Northern" type steam locomotives built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1930 and operated by the Great Northern Railway until the late 1950s. The locomotives were built to haul passengers on the GN mainline, pulling the ''Empire Builder'' and the '' Oriental Limited'' and were assigned to the Montana division for service between Williston, North Dakota and Havre, Montana and the Spokane division for service between Spokane, Washington and Wenatchee, Washington, then assigned to the Divide between Havre and Whitefish, Montana, of which mostly runs through the famed Marias Pass, though they were also used on GN tracks outside of their assigned areas.
