Haviland, Kansas
Haviland is a city in Kiowa County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 678. It is home of Barclay College and known for meteorite finds connected to the Haviland Crater and for an annual meteorite festival held in July. History Haviland was founded by a group of Quakers originally from Indiana and named for Laura Haviland, a leader of the Underground Railroad. Aslaug Haviland
Aslaug Haviland (January 19, 1913 – January 6, 2003), known as "Utah's Helen Keller" was a deaf and blind Norwegian woman who came to the United States at the age of 16 to attend the Perkins School for the Blind, Perkins Institute in Boston, Massachusetts. She became a nationally renowned motivational speaker. Biography Aslaug Haviland was born in Bergen, Norway, on January 19, 1913. At age 12 she contracted scarlet fever, and as a result lost both her hearing and vision. Little is known about her early life except that after the loss of her hearing she first attended Norway's school for the deaf, where she learned sign language, and later went on to attend the Royal School for the Blind. At the age of 16, Haviland's family was able to save up enough money to send her to the Perkins School for the Blind. Thomas Heath Haviland
Thomas Heath Haviland (13 November 1822 – 11 September 1895) was a Canadian lawyer, politician and father of Canadian Confederation. He was born in, and died in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. He was appointed to the Senate of Canada on 18 October 1873, and represented Prince Edward Island as a Conservative until his resignation on 1 July 1879. He was born in Charlottetown, the son of Thomas Heath Haviland Sr., and was educated in Belgium. On his return, he studied law and was called to the bar in 1846. In 1847, he married Anne Elizabeth Grubbe. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island for Georgetown and Royalty in 1846 and served until 1876. Haviland served in the provincial Executive Council from 1859 to 1862, from 1865 to 1867 and from 1870 to 1872. From 1863 to 1864, he was speaker for the assembly. Commander Willis Bradley Haviland, (10 March 1890 – 28 November 1944) was a pioneer military pilot in World War I and a naval air station commanding officer in World War II. As the sixteenth American volunteer in the Lafayette Escadrille, he was among the first air combat pilots to fight the Germans in World War I, before the United States officially entered the war. William Haviland
William Haviland (1718 – 16 September 1784) was an Irish-born general in the British Army. He is best known for his service in North America during the Seven Years' War. Life William Haviland was born in Ireland in 1718. He entered military service as an ensign in the 43rd Foot in 1739, and first saw action during the War of Jenkins' Ear in a failed expedition against Cartagena (in present-day Colombia). He then served during the Jacobite Rising of 1745, and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel by 1752. In 1757 he was sent to North America, where he was first in Lord Loudoun's aborted expedition to Louisbourg. That winter, as a colonel he was placed in command of Fort Edward on the upper Hudson River, the forward outpost on the frontier between British New York and French Canada.
