Haukipudas Church
The Haukipudas Church is an evangelical Lutheran church in Haukipudas, Oulu. The church building has been designed by Matti Honka, an Ostrobothnian builder of churches in the 18th century. The church was completed in 1762. Major renovations were carried out in the early 1900s according to plans by architect Viktor J. Sucksdorff. The church has been decorated with wall paintings by Mikael Toppelius Mikael Toppelius (10 August 1734, Oulu – 27 December 1821, Oulu) was a Finnish church painter; the last significant representative of the Ostrobothnian church painting tradition. Haukipudas (district)
Haukipudas is a district of Oulu, Finland. Together with Jokikylä and Martinniemi districts, it forms the Haukipudas area. Haukipudas is located in the river delta of the Kiiminkijoki river. It is bounded by the Bothnian Bay in the west, National road 4 in the east, Martinniemi district in the north and Kello district in the south. The district was established in 2013 when the Haukipudas municipality together with Kiiminki, Oulunsalo and Yli-Ii Yli-Ii ( sv, Överijo) was a municipality of Finland. Oulu ( , ; sv, Uleåborg ) is a city, municipality and a seaside resort of about 210,000 inhabitants in the region of North Ostrobothnia, Finland. Mikael Toppelius
Mikael Toppelius (10 August 1734, Oulu – 27 December 1821, Oulu) was a Finnish church painter; the last significant representative of the Ostrobothnian church painting tradition. His grandson was the well-known writer, Zachris Topelius. Biography The family's original surname was "Toppila", but his grandfather had Latinized it when entering into a civil service career. His mother was from a family with a long line of clergymen. His father was a clerk for the local customs office and an amateur painter, who inspired Mikael's interest in art and gave him his first lessons. He was only fourteen when his received his first employment from a local priest who had become interested in his career. This involved painting figures at the Gustav Adolf Church in Iisalmi. As it turned out, the priest's brother was the Royal Librarian so, in 1751, Toppelius went to Stockholm with a letter of recommendation to Johan Pasch, the court painter.
