Hartog Hamburger
Hartog Hamburger (Amsterdam, March 20, 1887 – Amsterdam, October 10, 1924) was a Dutch diamond polisher and baseball player. Hamburger played as an infielder for OVVO in Amsterdam, which belonged to the highest division of Dutch baseball, the Hoofdklasse. During a game on October 9, 1924, he was hit on the head by a line drive. He became dizzy but seemed to recover. However, the next day he died at his home as a result of the impact. He is thought to be the only European baseball player who died as the result of playing a baseball game. Hamburger's son, psychiatrist Max Hamburger, was a Jewish resistance fighter and Holocaust survivor. Hartog Jacob Hamburger
Hartog Jakob or Hartog Jacob Hamburger (9 March 1859 – 4 January 1924) was a Dutch physiologist, born in Alkmaar. After completing the Hogere Burgerschool in Alkmaar, Hamburger studied chemistry at Utrecht University, where he received his doctorate in 1883, on the determination of urea in urine. He subsequently worked with Utrecht ophthalmologist and physiologist Franciscus Cornelis Donders for seven years, and completed a medical degree. From 1888 he lectured in physiology and pathology at the National Veterinary School, also in Utrecht. In 1896, he invented the crystalloid solution known as Hamburger's solution or normal saline. Based on plant-based experiments by botanist Hugo de Vries, he developed a salt solution that was thought to have the same osmolality as human blood and therefore did not cause haemolysis of red blood cells. In the sports of baseball and softball, a batted ball is a pitch that has been contacted by the batter's bat. Batted balls are either fair or foul, and can be characterized as a fly ball, pop-up, line drive, or ground ball. In baseball, a foul ball counts as a strike against the batter, unless there are already two strikes on the batter, with special rules applying to foul tips and foul bunts. Fly balls are those hit in an arcing manner, with pop-ups being a subset of foul balls that do not travel far. Honkbal Hoofdklasse
The Honkbal Hoofdklasse (Dutch for ''Major League Baseball'') is the highest level of professional baseball in the Netherlands. It is an eight-team league that plays a 42-game schedule and is overseen by the Royal Netherlands Baseball and Softball Federation (KNBSB). Games are played principally on weekends. The season runs from April to September and is followed by the playoffs among the four best teams, which culminates in the Holland Series. Both of the playoff rounds are best-of-five.
