Hartbeat
''Hartbeat'' is a Children's BBC television arts programme presented by Tony Hart. It was broadcast between 1984 and 1993. The series was a follow on from ''Take Hart'' and taught children how to design art features and use everyday items to make objects. History Like its predecessor ''Take Hart'', ''Hartbeat'' featured Hart and the animated Plasticine character Morph and taught children how to design art features and use everyday items to make objects. The first episode was screened on 14 September 1984. Throughout its run it was shown during the afternoons with the first series on Fridays as a standalone programme. The second series onwards adopted the ''Children's BBC'' branding in 1985, when the service was launched, at which time it was moved to Wednesday afternoons where it remained until the series ended in 1993. Morph (character)
Morph is a British series of clay stop-motion comedy animations, named after the main character, who is a small Plasticine man, who speaks an unintelligible language and lives on a tabletop, his bedroom being a small wooden box. The character was initially seen interacting with Tony Hart, beginning in 1977, on several of his British television programmes, notably ''Take Hart'' and ''Hartbeat''. History Morph was produced for the BBC by Aardman Animations, later famous for the " Sledgehammer" music video, Wallace and Gromit, and Shaun the Sheep. Morph appears mainly in one-minute "shorts" interspersed throughout the ''Take Hart'' show. These are connected to the main show by having Hart deliver a line or two to Morph, who replies in gobbledygook but with meaningful gestures. Tony Hart
Norman Antony Hart (15 October 1925 – 18 January 2009),Debrett's People of Today 2008, Debrett's Peerage Ltd, 2007. known professionally as Tony Hart, was an English artist best known for his work in educating children in art through his role as a children's television presenter. Hart initially served as an officer in a Gurkha regiment until the start of Indian independence. After this he became involved in children's television from the 1950s, working on the BBC's '' Blue Peter'' for a few years before fronting a series of children's art programmes, including ''Vision On'', '' Take Hart'' and '' Hartbeat''. Hart's contributions to children's television include the design of the ship logo used by ''Blue Peter'' and the show's badges, and the animated character of Morph, who appeared beside him on his programmes following his introduction in the 1970s. Vision On
''Vision On'' was a British children's television programme, shown on BBC1 from 1964 to 1976 and designed specifically for children with hearing impairment. Concept and production ''Vision On'' was conceived and developed by BBC producers Ursula Eason and Patrick Dowling to replace a monthly series ''For Deaf Children'' (1952–64), a programme paced slowly enough for children to read captions and subtitles. It was noted in surveys that a favourite for deaf children was ''Top of the Pops'', due to its lively and fast-moving format and that even the profoundly deaf could still enjoy the music's lower frequency notes. There was initial disagreement as to whether lip-reading or British Sign Language would be more appropriate. Take Hart
''Take Hart'' is a British children's television programme about art, presented by Tony Hart. It took over from ''Vision On'', and ran from 1977 until 1983. The programme featured Hart and the animated Plasticine character Morph, and other characters created by David Sproxton like 'Smoulder the Moulder', which was a lump of mould which would create props by 'spraying' them out of a spray can. The only other human to appear on a regular basis was Mr Bennett, the caretaker, played by Colin Bennett. The programme won a BAFTA award for Hart in 1984. As well as demonstrating small-scale projects (the type that viewers might be able to do), Hart also created large-scale artworks on the TV studio floor, and even used beaches and other open spaces as 'canvases' (to be viewed from a camera-crane). Colin Bennett (actor)
Colin Bennett is an English actor. His television roles have included "Mr Bennett", the accident prone caretaker for Tony Hart in the BBC children's programmes ''Take Hart'' (1977–1983) and ''Hartbeat'' (1984–1989). He also portrayed the father in the 1985 Yellow Pages/Hornby advert ''Signal Box'' - although only in a later edit in which he thanked the son for his present. Among other TV duties, he presented '' Night Shift'' and ''You Should Be So Lucky'', as well as appearing in ''The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy'' as Zarquon. He also made a guest appearance in Last of the Summer Wine in 1999. He wrote a couple of TV series including '' Captain Zep - Space Detective'' and '' Luna'' before moving into the production field. He has a background in acting in and directing plays notably in 1978 appearing in, and directing, a musical version of The Point! alongside Davy Jones and Mickey Dolenz.
