Harry Turner (Australian Politician)
Henry Basil Turner (8 July 1905 – 19 September 1988) was an Australian politician. Born in Woolwich, New South Wales to metallurgist Basil William Turner and Mabel Lily, née Breillat, he attended Malvern School in Sydney, and then the University of Sydney and Cambridge University. In 1930 he became a barrister. He married Mildred Mary Raymond at Mosman on 4 July 1931; they were to have three daughters and a son. In 1937, he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for the seat of Gordon, representing the United Australia Party. He held the seat until 1952, during which time the United Australia Party became the Liberal Party. He was on military service 1940–44. In 1952, following the death of Billy Hughes, Turner successfully contested the resulting by-election for the federal seat of Bradfield. Harry Turner (American Football)
Harry Turner (March 5, 1887 – November 15, 1914) was a professional football player. He was one of the most popular players on the Canton Professionals, the pre-National Football League version of the Canton Bulldogs who played in the Ohio League. The team's center, Turner played with the Pros from around 1911 until his death in 1914. Canton Professionals By 1911 Turner became the captain of the Professionals. At this time a rivalry existed between the team and Peggy Parratt, the captain of Shelby Blues. Parratt, prior to joining Shelby Blues, was the captain of the hated Massillon Tigers, the top rival for Canton. Harry Turner (19 June 1882 – 14 April 1967) was an English professional footballer who played as an outside forward for Southampton in the 1900s. Football career Turner was born in Farnborough, Hampshire, the younger brother of Archie Turner (1877–1925), who played for Southampton from 1899 to 1902, and also made two appearances for England. He first played for his local side at South Farnborough, from where he was invited to The Dell for a trial in April 1900. He eventually signed for Southampton in late 1903. He made his debut for "the Saints" on Boxing Day 1903, when he replaced the injured Dick Evans in a 1–0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur. For the remainder of the season, he vied with his unrelated namesake, Joe Turner for the outside-right position, making ten appearances, scoring twice. Harry Moreton Stanley Turner
Wing Commander Henry Moreton Stanley Turner MBE FRSE (1875–1951) was an English physician who served as senior medical advisor to the RAF between the First and Second World Wars. Life He was born in Hanley, Staffordshire on 2 December 1875. He appears to have been named after the English journalist Henry Morton Stanley, a local hero at the time of his birth. He is thought to have studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and in 1899 he was practicing in London. In 1906 he was living with his family in Wandsworth in London. In 1909 he moved with his family to the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic, as GP in Stanley. He also appears to have been a Major in the Territorial Force (later the Territorial Army). At the outbreak of the First World War he became Commander of the island's defence force. Under a variety of names and within a number of organizations over at least 17 years, the group around Harry Turner, or Turnerites was a presence within Trotskyism in the United States. History The group originated in a controversy within the Spartacist League in the late 1960s. The leadership under James Robertson wanted the group to focus on organizing among students while Harry Turner wanted to organize a series of rank-and-file caucuses within labor unions, particularly minority workers, to oppose both employers and the union leadership. To this end Turner convinced the Spartacist League to create a pan-union Militant Labor Civil Rights Committee in September 1967. Robertson, however, had this group dissolved the next year and suggested that cadres form separate caucuses in their respective unions.
