Harry John Lawson
Henry John Lawson, also known as Harry Lawson, (23 February 1852–12 July 1925) was a British bicycle designer, racing cyclist, motor industry pioneer, and fraudster. As part of his attempt to create and control a British motor industry Lawson formed and co floated The Daimler Motor Company Limited in London in 1896. It later began manufacture in Coventry. Lawson organised the 1896 Emancipation Day drive now commemorated annually by the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run on the same course. Early years Lawson was born on February 23, 1852 in the City of London the son of Thomas Lawson, a Calvinistic Methodist minister and brass turner and his wife Anne Lucy Kent. In 1873 the family moved to Brighton and Lawson designed several types of bicycle. His efforts were described as the "first authentic design of safety bicycle employing chain-drive to the rear wheel which was actually made", and has been ranked alongside John Kemp Starley as an inventor of the modern bicycle. Harry Lawson Webster Levy-Lawson, 1st Viscount Burnham, (18 December 1862 – 20 July 1933) was a British newspaper proprietor. He was originally a Liberal politician before joining the Liberal Unionist Party in the late 1890s. He sat in the House of Commons 1885–1892, 1893–1895, 1905–1906 and 1910–1916 when he inherited his barony. Biography Levy-Lawson was born in St Pancras, London, the son of Edward Levy-Lawson, 1st Baron Burnham, and his wife Harriette Georgiana Webster. He was educated at Cheam School, Headley, Berkshire, Eton and Balliol College, Oxford. His name was legally changed from Levy to Levy-Lawson on 11 December 1875. He became a lieutenant in the Royal Buckinghamshire Yeomanry, treasurer of the Free Land League, vice president of the Municipal Reform League, and a member of the executive committee of Municipal Federation League. Sir Harry Sutherland Wightman Lawson KCMG (5 March 1875 – 12 June 1952), was an Australian politician who served as Premier of Victoria from 1918 to 1924. He later entered federal politics, serving as a Senator for Victoria from 1929 to 1935, and was briefly a minister in the Lyons Government. He was a member of the Nationalist Party until 1931, when it was subsumed into the United Australia Party. Early life Lawson was born in Dunolly, the son of a Presbyterian clergyman of Scottish descent. He was educated at a local school and then, briefly, at Scotch College in Melbourne. Frederick Henry Lawson, FBA (14 July 1897 – 15 May 1983), published as F. H. Lawson, was a British legal scholar. He was Professor of Comparative Law at the University of Oxford from 1948 to 1964. Biography Lawson was born in Leeds, the son of a merchant. He was educated at Leeds Grammar School and The Queen's College, Oxford, where he was Hastings Exhibitioner in Classics. From 1916 to 1918 he served in an anti-aircraft regiment. After the war, he read Modern History instead, taking a First in 1921. The following year he took another First in Jurisprudence, and was called to the bar by Gray's Inn in 1923. In 1925 he was elected a Junior Research Fellow at Merton College, Oxford. He was appointed University Lecturer in Byzantine Law in 1929, elected an Official Fellow and Tutor in Law at Merton in 1930, and appointed All Souls Reader in Roman Law in 1931. Colonel Harold Andrew Balvaird Lawson (1899 – 1985) was a Scottish soldier and officer of arms in the Court of the Lord Lyon. Between 1929 and 1939, Lawson was Unicorn Pursuivant, before serving as Rothesay Herald from 1939 until his death. In this capacity he participated in the Coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953.
