Harry Cockerill
Francis Henry Cockerill (5 July 1899 – 8 August 1987) was an Australian politician. He was born at Greta to miner Francis William Cockerill and Edith Maria Wheatley. He attended school at Kurri Kurri and Cockerill became a miner at Branxton. On 14 July 1923 he married Dorothy Morley, with whom he had four children. He was active in the mining unions, and also served on Kearsley Shire Council from 1947 to 1950. From 1959 to 1973 he was a Labor member of the New South Wales Legislative Council, having previously served on the Labor central executive from 1950 to 1952 and from 1955 to 1959. Greta, New South Wales
Greta is a small town in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia. History The Traditional Owners and Custodians of the Maitland area are the Wonnarua people. The Greta area was first colonized by Europeans around Anvil Creek in the 1830s. When the town was surveyed in 1842 it was given the name Greta, possibly after a small river in Cumberland, England. Coal mining was established in the area in 1862 with the development of a railway station. In 1864, kerosene shale was discovered. By the 1870s, Greta had four hotels, four churches, a school and schools of arts. Geologist Edgeworth David discovered the Greta Coal Seam in 1886. By 1907 ten collieries were in operation. Kurri Kurri is the largest town in a group of towns and hamlets, including Stanford Merthyr, Pelaw Main, Weston, Abermain and Heddon Greta, called Kurri Kurri – Weston by the ABS. Branxton is a town in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia. Branxton is north of Sydney via the Sydney-Newcastle Freeway and New England Highway. Branxton is located mostly in the City of Cessnock, but part of it is in Singleton Shire. It had a population of 1,991 at the . History Branxton lies on the Traditional Country of the Wonnarua people. After colonisation, the township was initially referred to as Black Creek but in 1848, its name was changed to Branxton as the developer believed that the Black Creek would not attract buyers. As settlers took up further land grants the township expanded capitalizing on trade from settlers heading further north to settle the Liverpool Plains. By 1860 it was a village of 500 residents, a steam mill, post office, a mechanics institute and four hotels. The New South Wales Legislative Council, often referred to as the upper house, is one of the two chambers of the parliament of the Australian state of New South Wales.
