Cardiff is a small town in the Lake Macquarie LGA of New South Wales, Australia. It is located west-southwest of Newcastle. Cardiff is home to two government primary schools, a Catholic primary school and a government high school. It has its own commercial centre with a post office, pub (hotel), real estate agencies, take-away shops, a record store, two opportunity stores, numerous hairdressers and two supermarkets. History The Aboriginal people, in this area, the Awabakal, were the first people of this land. The first grant to a white settler in the Cardiff area was a parcel of to George Weller in 1833, stretching west of the current Macquarie Road to Argenton and Cockle Creek. Other selections were taken up by individual settlers from 1862 to the east of the Weller grant. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). The Cardiff Cobras are a rugby league club that plays in the Newcastle & Hunter Rugby League competition. Cardiff last won the A Grade Championship in 2014, defeating rivals Windale Eagles 24–20 at Kurri Kurri Sportsground. History Although Cardiff had been represented in Rugby League as far back as 1911, the Cardiff RFLC was formed 12 February 1930. People present at the foundation meeting were A H Geikhe, D Smith, C Williams and Mr Clarke, who held the meeting at his house. It was decided to enter a team in the Newcastle Rugby League third-grade competition along with an under 20s team. 2016 Australian Census
The 2016 Australian census was the 17th national population census held in Australia. The census was officially conducted with effect on Tuesday, 9 August 2016. The total population of the Commonwealth of Australia was counted as – an increase of 8.8 per cent or people over the . Norfolk Island joined the census for the first time in 2016, adding 1,748 to the population. The ABS annual report revealed that $24 million in additional expenses accrued due to the outage on the census website. Hillsborough is a suburb of the City of Lake Macquarie, New South Wales, Australia from Newcastle's central business district on the eastern side of Lake Macquarie. Tickhole Tunnel
The Tickhole Tunnel, also called the Kotara (Tickhole) Railway Tunnel, is a heritage-listed double track railway tunnel that carries the Main Northern railway line beneath the Newcastle Inner City Bypass (A37) and is a diversion over the Tickhole Creek. The tunnel is located between Cardiff and Kotara stations in the City of Newcastle local government area of New South Wales, Australia. The original tunnel opened on 15 August 1887. It initially only had one track, but provision was made for the line to be duplicated which duly occurred in 1891. As part of the electrification of the line, in 1983 tenders were called for a second tunnel, of , completed in 1984.
