Harpya
''Harpya'' is a 1979 Belgian short comedy horror film written and directed by Raoul Servais, which tells the story of a man (portrayed by ) who tries to live with a harpy (portrayed by Fran Waller Zeper), a mythical being that is half woman and half bird of prey with an insatiable appetite. The nine-minutes-long film, which has no spoken dialogue, explores authority and domination, themes Servais had earlier addressed on a larger, societal level but here applied to a personal relationship. Servais, who began to make animated short films in the 1950s, wanted to move away from the cartoon format and invented a new technique for combining animation and live action specifically for ''Harpya''. Raoul Servais
Raoul Servais (born 1 May 1928) is a Belgian filmmaker, animator, and comics artist. He was born in Ostend, Belgium, and is a fundamental figure of the Belgian animation scene, as well as the founder of the animation faculty of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK). Servais received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the World Festival of Animated Film - Animafest Zagreb in 2016. He is best known for the 1979 animated film, ''Harpya''. At the 9th Magritte Awards, he received an Honorary Magritte Award from the Académie André Delvaux. 1979 Cannes Film Festival
The 32nd Cannes Film Festival was held from 10 to 24 May 1979. The Palme d'Or went to ''Apocalypse Now'' by Francis Ford Coppola, which was screened as a work in progress, and '' Die Blechtrommel (The Tin Drum)'' by Volker Schlöndorff. The festival opened with ''Hair'', directed by Miloš Forman and closed with '' À nous deux'', directed by Claude Lelouch. Françoise Sagan, the President of the Jury raised a controversy as she complained that Robert Favre Le Bret, director of the Festival, had stepped out of his role and had put pressure on the jury for the choice of Coppola's film, while she had defended ''The Tin Drum'' to the last minute of the competition. Siren (1968 Film)
''Siren'' ( nl, Sirene) is a 1968 Belgian animated short film written and directed by Raoul Servais. Set in a harbour city dominated by mechanical beasts and reason, it is about the encounter between a boy and a mermaid. The nine and a half minutes long film was produced with support from the Flemish Community and received a number of awards at international film festivals. Plot In a harbour, large mechanical cranes lift boxes full of weapons while behaving like aggressive beasts. Flying reptiles circle in the sky and steal from a lone fisherman's catch, which consists solely of fishbones. A cabin boy at a ship plays flute and his music attracts a mermaid to the surface, but the cranes aggressively sink their hooks and claws into the water and she tries to escape. Argonautica
The ''Argonautica'' ( el, Ἀργοναυτικά , translit=Argonautika) is a Greek epic poem written by Apollonius Rhodius in the 3rd century BC. The only surviving Hellenistic epic, the ''Argonautica'' tells the myth of the voyage of Jason and the Argonauts to retrieve the Golden Fleece from remote Colchis. Their heroic adventures and Jason's relationship with the dangerous Colchian princess/sorceress Medea were already well known to Hellenistic audiences, which enabled Apollonius to go beyond a simple narrative, giving it a scholarly emphasis suitable to the times.
