Harper, Prince Edward Island
Harper (sometimes referred to collectively as Harper Road) is a Canadian rural community located in western Prince County, Prince Edward Island. Among other roads, Harper is located on Route 158, which runs from Route 2 (Tignish) to Route 156 ( Palmer Road). The second community on Route 158 is Leoville, which continues to officially exist, although a 1998 civic address reform in Prince Edward Island saw all Leoville addresses consolidated under Harper. Many locals refer to Harper and Leoville as "Harper Road" collectively. Harper is home to ''Harper's Brook'', a tributary to the ''Tignish River'', which runs from Tignish to DeBlois. Harper has a population of approximately 200 residents and traces its name to the explorer William Harper, who inhabited the area during the 19th century. Prince County is located in western Prince Edward Island, Canada. The county's defining geographic feature is Malpeque Bay, a sub-basin of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, which creates the narrowest portion of Prince Edward Island's landmass, an isthmus upon which the city of Summerside is located. Route 2 (Prince Edward Island)
Route 2, also known as Veterans Memorial Highway and the All Weather Highway, is a two-lane uncontrolled access highway traversing Prince Edward Island, Canada from Tignish to Souris. Route 2 was recognized as the first numbered highway in the province in 1890, when it opened between Charlottetown and Summerside. It passes through the cities of Summerside and Charlottetown and roughly parallels the former primary railway line through the province, which was abandoned in 1989. The highway was first paved in the 1950s with many upgrades in recent decades. A perimeter arterial highway (ring road) across the northern and eastern part of Charlottetown was constructed as part of Route 2 in the 1990s with funding from a $200 million federal adjustment fund for road construction after the railway was abandoned. Tignish
Tignish is a Canadian town located in Prince County, Prince Edward Island. It is located approximately northwest of the city of Summerside, and northwest of the city of Charlottetown. It has a population of 719. The name "Tignish" is derived from the Mi'kmaq "Mtagunich", meaning "paddle". The name is also believed to come from a Gaelic phrase meaning “Home Place”. Tignish was founded in the late 1790s by nine francophone Acadian families, with further immigrants (mostly Irish) arriving in the 19th century and settling mostly in the nearby smaller locality of Anglo–Tignish (meaning "English Tignish"). Many of Tignish residents today are either of Acadian or Irish heritage. Leoville (sometimes known collectively as Harper Road) is a Canadian rural community located on Route 158, 3.50–5.00 miles SW of Tignish in western Prince County, Prince Edward Island.
