Harold Interlocking
Harold Interlocking is a large railroad junction located in New York City. It is the busiest rail junction in the United States. It serves trains on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor and the Long Island Rail Road's Main Line and Port Washington Branch, which diverge at the junction. Reconstruction work on Harold Interlocking started in 2009, as part of the East Side Access project to bring LIRR service to Grand Central Terminal. As part of the project, two tunnels for Northeast Corridor trains to bypass Harold Interlocking are being built to address congestion problems and occasional accidents. Location and operation The junction is located in Queens, New York, east of the East River Tunnels and next to Amtrak's and NJ Transit Rail Operations' Sunnyside Yard. During the rush hour period, over 40 trains per hour pass through the interlocking; and a total of 783 trains each weekday. Harold is a structure used in longform improvisational theatre that is performed by improv troupes and teams across the world. In the Harold structure, characters and themes are introduced and then recur in a series of connected scenes. It was first performed in California by The Committee in 1967. History The Committee, a San Francisco improv group, performed the first Harold in Concord, California, in 1967. They were invited to a high school and decided to do their improvisations on the war in Vietnam. On the way home in a Volkswagen bus, they were discussing the performance, when one of them asked what they should call it. Allaudin (Bill) Mathieu, ( W.A. Mathieu) called out "Harold", which was a joking reference to a line from '' A Hard Day's Night'' where a reporter asks George Harrison what he calls his haircut and he answers "Arthur". Harold (foaled 1876 in Pennsylvania) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse. Background Harold was a chestnut horse bred by Aristides Welch who owned both his sire and his dam. Sired by Leamington, a four-time Leading sire in North America, he was out of the mare, Maggie B. B. who produced two other Classic winners: Iroquois, a full brother to Harold who became the first American-bred horse to ever win England's renowned Epsom Derby, plus the colt Panique by Alarm who won the 1884 Belmont Stakes. Severe Tropical Cyclone Harold was a very powerful tropical cyclone which caused widespread destruction in the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji, and Tonga during April 2020. It was the first Category 5 tropical cyclone in 2020. The seventh named storm of the 2019–20 Australian region cyclone season, eighth named storm, and fourth severe tropical cyclone of the 2019–20 South Pacific cyclone season, Harold was first noted as a developing tropical low within a trough of low pressure during April 1, while it was located to the east of Papua New Guinea. Alpine, Los Angeles County, California
Alpine, more fully Alpine Springs and also called Harold, was an unincorporated community in Los Angeles County, California located 2 miles south of where Palmdale is now. The Trego Post Office was located at the Alpine Station stop on the Southern Pacific Railroad which stood at what is today the intersection of Sierra Highway and Barrel Springs Road (previously Fort Tejon Road). The Trego post office was in operation from July 1, 1884, until December 18, 1884, when the name was changed to Harold. The first Harold post office was established on December 19, 1890, and was discontinued on September 16, 1894. A second post office named Harold was in operation from July 13, 1895, until June 15, 1901, when the papers were moved to Palmdale. Alpine Station was mostly populated by railway employees, and Harold/Alpine dwindled as New Palmdale grew alongside it.
