Harkins Transportation Company
Harkins Transportation Company was founded in 1914 by L.P.(Lovelace Perne) Hosford, Henry Pittock, Henry L. Pittock, and A.J. Lewthwaite. The line was named after the tugboat ''Jessie Harkins'', which had been built by Jacob Kamm and named after Hosford's niece. The line ran steamboats on the lower Columbia from 1914 to 1937, when it was forced into bankruptcy. Steamboats owned by the company included Georgiana (steamboat), ''Georgiana'', Lurline (sternwheeler 1878), ''Lurline'', ''Undine'', and ''Madeline'' (ex ''Joseph Kellogg''). In 1931, the company built the diesel propeller tug ''L.P. Hosford'', using upper works salvaged from the ''Lurline''.Newell, Gordon, and Williamson, Joe, ''Pacific Steamboats'', at page 40, Superior Publishing, Seattle, WA (1958) See also *Georgiana (steamboat), ''Georgiana'' *Lurline (sternwheeler 1878), ''Lurline'' References

Jessie Harkins
''Jessie Harkins'' was a propeller-driven steamboat that operated on the Columbia River in the USA starting in 1903. It was rebuilt at least twice. Originally, ''Jessie Harkins'' was one of the larger gasoline-engined vessels to operate on the Columbia River. ''Jessie Harkins'' was built for the Harkins Transportation Company. In 1905, ''Jessie Harkins'' was somewhat enlarged, and converted from gasoline to steam engine power. In 1909, ''Jessie Harkins'' was again reconstructed and the components were used to build two new vessels. The cabin structure (called the "house") of the original vessel was removed, and installed on a newly built hull. This boat kept the name ''Jessie Harkins'', but was assigned a new official merchant vessel identification number, 206018. This new boat was larger than the one built in 1903. The old hull from the 1903 boat was sold to another company, which built a new cabin structure on the hull, and operated the boat for about six months in 1909 under t ...

Georgiana (steamboat)
''Georgiana'' was a propeller-driven steamboat that operated on the Columbia River from 1914 to 1940. ''Georgiana'' was built of wood, and specially designed for the Harkins Transportation Company, a steamboat line in which the wealthy Henry L. Pittock was a shareholder. Construction and launching ''Georgiana'' was built at Joseph Supple's yard in Portland, Oregon just as railroads and highways would end the days of steamboats on the Columbia river and all other inland waterways of the Pacific Northwest. Her name honored three women, Georgiana Pittock, wife of Henry L., and her granddaughters, Georgiana Leadbetter and Georgiana Gantenbein. L.O. (Lyle Owen) Hosford was the first captain of ''Georgiana'', and his sister Cora christened the vessel at her launching on June 20, 1914. ''Georgiana'' was small (242 tons displacement, 145' length, 22.5' beam) compared to some of the other ships that ran on the river in those days, such as the aging ''T.J. Potter'' and the magnificent (an ...

Lurline (sternwheeler 1878)
''Lurline'' was a steamboat that served from 1878 to 1930 on the Columbia and Willamette rivers. ''Lurline'' was a classic example of the Columbia river type of steamboat. Construction ''Lurline'' was launched September 30, 1878 by Jacob Kamm, who with John C. Ainsworth had designed and built the first sternwheelersThere were earlier steamboats in the Northwest, but these were mostly sidewheelers which proved unsuitable to the conditions on the Northwest rivers and inland waterways in the Northwest, '' Jennie Clark'' and '' Carrie Ladd'', nearly a quarter of a century before. Operations on the Columbia Capt. James T. Gray took charge of the ''Lurline'' and handled her on the Vancouver route for the first ten years of her career. During the summer season she made one trip a week in the seaside traffic, and occasionally towed ships, competing with the Oregon Railway & Navigation Company's steamers. Competition from the ''Lurline'' was said to have cost the Oregon Railway & Nav ...

Steamboats Of The Columbia River
:''This article concerns steamboats operating between Tri-Cities, Washington and the Pacific Ocean. For boats on the river's upper reaches, see Steamboats of the Columbia River, Wenatchee Reach, Steamboats of the upper Columbia and Kootenay Rivers, and Steamboats of the Arrow Lakes.'' Many steamboats operated on the Columbia River and its tributaries, in the Pacific Northwest region of North America, from about 1850 to 1981. Major tributaries of the Columbia that formed steamboat routes included the Willamette and Snake rivers. Navigation was impractical between the Snake River and the Canada–US border, due to several rapids, but steamboats also operated along the Wenatchee Reach of the Columbia, in northern Washington, and on the Arrow Lakes of southern British Columbia. Types of craft The paddle-wheel steamboat has been described as an economic "invasion craft" which allowed the rapid exploitation of the Oregon Country, a huge area of the North American continent eventua ...
