Harar Meda Airport
Harar Meda Airport (Ha'rar Me'da: ሐረር ሜዳ) is an airport in Bishoftu, Oromia, Ethiopia. It is the main base for the Ethiopian Air Force. History In 1946, the beginnings of what became the Ethiopian Air Force were moved from Lideta Airfield in Addis Ababa to Bishoftu. The former facility was instead utilized by Ethiopian Airlines. The initial group of 19 Swedes under Count Carl Gustaf von Rosen, who were to train the pilots and support personal, arrived there after leaving Sweden between 9 January and 16 July 1946. Both Ethiopian cadets and the Swedish instructors took part in constructing the first buildings on the base. Six Saab 91 Safir training airplanes were bought in Sweden and flown to the new airbase on 24 December 1946. On 10 November 1947, a fleet of 16 Saab-built B-17s was landed at Bishoftu by Swedish pilots. Lideta Airfield
Lideta Airport also colloquially known as the Old Airport (and "Ivo Oliveti" airport when inaugurated) is a decommissioned military airport located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. History Before the construction of the Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, it was Lideta Airport (named after the local area, now better known as the Old Airport) that had served the nation for nearly three decades. It is located southwest of the capital city about 4.82 kilometres from the centre of the town at an elevation of 7,749 feet (2362m) above sea level with an average temperature of 25 °C. A new aerodrome named Akaki was built in the first months of 1934, clearly for the Fokker VIIs, as they were too large for the airfield at Jan Meda. Count Carl Gustaf Ericsson von Rosen (19 August 1909 – 13 July 1977) was a Swedish pioneer aviator, humanitarian, and mercenary pilot. He flew relief missions in a number of conflicts as well as combat missions for Finland (whose first military aircraft his father had donated in 1918) and Biafra . The Saab 91 Safir (Swedish for sapphire) is a three (91A, B, B-2) or four (91C, D) seater, single engine trainer aircraft. The Safir was built by Saab AB in Linköping, Sweden (203 aircraft) and by '' De Schelde'' in Dordrecht, Netherlands (120 aircraft). Design and development Development of the Safir began in 1944 as part of a plan to compensate for reductions in orders for military aircraft when the Second World War finally ended.
