Description The restaurant serves Hawaiian-Japanese ramen, including tonkotsu, shoyu, miso, and shaka broth varieties. The G-Special is a pork belly-based ramen broth with pork belly, spinach, sprouts, and shiitake. According to Seiji Nanbu of ''Eater Portland'', "Hapa's ramen is meant to be durable for long car rides home, with a thick and squiggly proprietary noodle recipe." Hapa has also served poke, wakame salad, and other snacks. The drink menu has included Japanese whiskey, bourbon, and rye, as well as Japanese and Oregon sakes. The city of Portland, Oregon, United States, has experienced a boom in the number of food carts due to relatively low regulation compared to other North American cities. History In 1965, the first food cart in Portland, which sold kosher hot dogs, was set up across from Portland City Hall. In 1976, Portland opened up all of its downtown parks to competitive bidding. A 2001 report in ''The Oregonian'' stated Portland was home to 175 carts, with fierce competition for the four cart spaces available since 1987 in the South Park Blocks. A bidding war in February 2001 led to a combined price of $192,000 for the spaces. Afuri (also known as Afuri Izakaya) is a chain of ramen restaurants, based in Tokyo, Japan. History The original noodle shop opened at the base of Mount Afuri in 2001. Founder Hiroto Nakamura partnered with Taichi Ishizuki to open a location in southeast Portland's Buckman neighborhood in 2016. Since then, three additional locations have opened in the Portland metropolitan area, in downtown and northwest Portland as well as Beaverton.
