Hans Trass
Hans-Voldemar Trass (2 May 1928 – 14 February 2017) was an Estonian ecologist and botanist. He was a member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences since 1975 and president of the Estonian Naturalists' Society from 1964 to 1973 and 1985 to 1991. In 1992, Trass was awarded the Acharius Medal by the International Association for Lichenology. Trass was married to Estonian actress Raine Loo. Teuvo Ahti
Teuvo ("Ted") Tapio Ahti (born 1934) is a Finnish botanist and lichenologist. He has had a long career at the University of Helsinki that started in 1963, and then following his retirement in 1997, at the Botanical Museum of the Finnish Museum of Natural History. Known as a specialist of the lichen family Cladoniaceae, Ahti has published more than 280 scientific publications. A ''Festschrift'' was dedicated to him in 1994, and in 2000 he was awarded the prestigious Acharius Medal for lifetime contributions to lichenology. Education and career Ahti started developing an interest in botany at the age of 15, when he worked on a class project involving collecting 100 species of plants. His attention turned to lichens when a classmate who had worked for Veli Räsänen pointed them out during a birdwatching excursion in Helsinki. Raine Loo
Raine Loo (28 March 1945 – 16 May 2020) was an Estonian stage, television and film actress. Early life and education Raine Loo was born in the former Taevere Parish in Viljandi County, which is now part of Põhja-Sakala Parish. She attended No. 8 School in Tartu (now, the Tartu Forselius School), graduating in 1963. Afterward, she studied acting at the Vanemuine teaching studio, where she graduated from in 1965. Stage career In 1965, Loo became engaged at the Vanemuine theatre as an actress. Her first major role at the Vanemuine was that of Ingrid in a 1965 production of Mati Unt's ''See maailm või teine''. Notable performances at the Vanemuine have included roles in works by such varied international authors and playwrights as: Shakespeare, Chekhov, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, T. S. International Association For Lichenology
The International Association for Lichenology (IAL) is an organisation that encourages the understanding of lichens and lichenology, and promotes their study and conservation worldwide. It unites lichenologists across the globe, as well as national and regional organisations into one group. It is affiliated to the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS). The IAL organises field courses and excursions, as well as symposia which are the biggest events in lichenology on the international level. The 8th International Symposium will be held in Helsinki, Finland, in August 2016. The IAL publishes a biennial journal, the International Lichenological Newsletter which was the raison d'etre for the IAL being formed in 1967 in order to provide a forum for lichenologists worldwide to communicate with one other.
