Hannu Leminen
Hannu Päiviö Leminen (originally Hanno Leminen; 5 January 1910 in Helsinki – 6 June 1997 in Turku) was a Finnish film director, set designer, screenwriter and later an executive at the Finnish Broadcasting Company. During his career, Leminen directed almost 30 films. Leminen was married to actress Helena Kara (1916–2002) who appeared in almost all of his films. He won four Jussi Awards; for directing the film ''Valkoiset ruusut'' (1943) and the Olympic documentary ''Maailmat kohtaavat'' (''Where the World Meets'', 1952), and for set designing ''En ole kreivitär'' (1945) and ''Morsiusseppele'' (1954). Helena Kara
Aini Helena Kara (originally Aini Helena Dahl, 16 August 1916 – 26 February 2002) was a Finnish film actress. Like Lea Joutseno and Regina Linnanheimo, she was one of the few Finnish film actors without a theatrical background. Kara is best remembered for her role in a 1943 melodrama ''Valkoiset ruusut''. Childhood and early life Helena Kara was born in Salo into a family of four children. Until 1927, her family name was Dahl. While working as a ticket vendor in a Turku cinema in 1937, she met the head of Suomi-Filmi production company, Risto Orko, who invited her for a screen test. She soon appeared in her first film, ''Miehen kylkiluu'' (1937), directed by Orvo Saarikivi. Marriage and later life Kara married director Hannu Leminen (1910–1997) on 10 February 1940, and their marriage lasted until Leminen's death. They had three children together. The Jussi Awards are Finland's premier film industry prizes, awarded annually to recognize the achievements of directors, actors, and writers. History The first Jussi Awards ceremony was held on 16 November 1944 at the Restaurant Adlon in Helsinki. The award is one of the oldest films awards in Europe. The original planned name for the prize was ''Aino'', but Jussi won in the end. The name comes from a character in the 1924 and 1936 Pohjalaisia films. The awards were originally organized by the ''Elokuvajournalistit'' organization, but the task was transferred in the early 1960s to the ''Filmiaura'' organization, composed of around 300 members working in the Finnish film industry. Because of the controversy surrounding the transfer, no awards were handed out in 1960 and 1961.
