It was the third appearance of a men's handball tournament as a medal event at the Olympic Games, after 1936 and 1972 (a demonstration event was held in 1952). Ștefan Birtalan
Ştefan Birtalan (born 25 September 1948) is a former Romanian handball player, coach and sports official. Birtalan was one of the best players of his time and was named the World Player of the Year in 1974, 1976 and 1977. He spent most of his club career with Steaua București, winning with them 12 Romanian championships and the European Champions Cup in 1977. He also won the world title in 1970 and 1974, becoming the top scorer at the 1974 tournament with 43 goals. He participated in the 1972, 1976 and 1980 Olympics winning one silver and bronze medals. Biography Birtalan is of Hungarian descent through his father István. His mother was Romanian and her name was Valeria. As a teenager he trained in handball, volleyball, basketball and athletics. Thomas Pazyj
Thomas Pazyj (8 April 1955 in Copenhagen – 27 November 2016) was a Danish handball player who competed in the 1976 Summer Olympics and in the 1980 Summer Olympics. He played regularly as a right wing, but could also play right back. Handball career Pazyj started his senior career at the Copenhagen based club Saga. In the 1975-76 season, he scored the second most goals in the Danish 1st Division with 135 goals in 18 matches. He later played for HF Olympia in Helsingborg, Sweden, before returning to Denmark to play for IK Skovbakken. Lastly he played in Randers, where he played together with his brother, Lars Pazyj. In 1976 at the age of 18 he was part of the Danish team which finished eighth in the Olympic tournament. He played all six matches and scored 18 goals.
