Harry Hanan (14 December 1916 - 19 January 1982) was a British cartoonist, best known as the creator of the pantomime comic strip ''Louie'' which he began in 1947. Josiah Hanan
Josiah Alfred Hanan (12 May 1868 – 22 March 1954), known to his colleagues as Joe Hanan, was a New Zealand politician, cabinet minister, and legislative councillor. He also served as Mayor of Invercargill, and as Chancellor of the University of New Zealand. Early life Hanan was born in Invercargill, New Zealand, and educated at Invercargill Central School (dux) and Southland Boys' High School. He was a civil and criminal lawyer 1889–1899 with a good reputation, defending Minnie Dean and John Keown on murder charges. Political career He entered politics in 1894, when he became a borough councillor. In 1896, he was elected Mayor of Invercargill (the youngest, and the first NZ-born). In 1899 he was elected as the member of the House of Representatives for the Invercargill electorate. He held the electorate for the next 26 years, and retired at the 1925 election. Peter Hanan
Peter Sedgley Hanan (30 November 1915 – 15 September 2008) was a New Zealand swimmer who represented his country at the New Zealand at the 1938 British Empire Games, 1938 and New Zealand at the 1950 British Empire Games, 1950 British Empire Games. Early life and family Born in Morrinsville on 30 November 1915, Hanan was the son of Frederick Arthur Hanan, a dentist and later a dairy farmer, and Ida Helen Hanan (nÊe Dewes). His younger brother was Patrick Hanan, and his maternal grandfather was Albert Dewes. Hanan was educated at Mount Albert Grammar School in Auckland, and trained as an accountant. He married Esma Elaine St George in 1946, and the couple went on to have two children. Swimming Hanan began swimming at the public swimming baths in Morrinsville, which opened in 1924, as a child, and later receiving coaching from Malcolm Champion at the Tepid Baths in Auckland. Ralph Hanan
Josiah Ralph Hanan (13 June 1909 – 24 July 1969), known as Ralph Hanan, was a New Zealand politician of the National Party. He was Mayor of Invercargill and then represented the electorate in Parliament, following in his uncle Josiah Hanan's footsteps. He served in World War II and his injuries ultimately caused his death at age 60. He is best remembered for the abolition of the death penalty, which had been suspended by the Labour Party, but which National was to reintroduce. As Minister of Justice, it was Hanan's role to introduce the legislation to Parliament, but he convinced enough of his party colleagues to vote with the opposition and thus abolished the death penalty in New Zealand.
