Hamilton County Courthouse (Ohio)
The Hamilton County Courthouse is located in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio and contains the Hamilton County Ohio Courts of Common Pleas, Common Pleas Court, the Municipal Court, Small Claims Court, and the Court clerk, Clerk of Courts offices. The present courthouse is the fourth courthouse constructed on the site. The second courthouse was destroyed in the Cincinnati riots of 1884. The Hamilton County Courthouse is connected to the county jail, the Hamilton County Justice Center, via a skybridge. Cincinnati Riots Of 1884
The Cincinnati riots of 1884, also known as the Cincinnati Courthouse riots, were caused by public outrage over the decision of a jury to return a verdict of manslaughter in what was seen as a clear case of murder. A mob in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States, attempted to find and lynch the perpetrator. In the violence that followed over the next few days, more than 50 people died and the courthouse was destroyed. It was one of the most destructive riots in American history. Background Cincinnati in the 1880s was an industrial city with a rising crime rate, due partly to general dissatisfaction with labor conditions. The Cincinnati police force had 300 men and 5 patrol wagons. In this period they arrested 50 people for murder, but only four were hanged. By January 1, 1884, there were twenty-three accused murderers in the jail. Hamilton County Justice Center
The Hamilton County Justice Center is the main county jail branch for Hamilton County, Ohio. It is serviced by the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office. The facility is located at 1000 Sycamore Street in the central business district of Cincinnati. The Hamilton County Justice Center was built in 1985 at an expense of $54 million. The complex consists of two brutalist-style twin towers, each of which rise ten floors. The jail twin towers are connected to each other by a windowless skywalk. Direct access to the jail from the Hamilton County Courthouse (across the street) is afforded by another skywalk passing over Sycamore Street.
