Hackwood Stakes
The Hackwood Stakes is a Group 3 flat horse race in Great Britain open to thoroughbreds aged three years or older. It is run at Newbury over a distance of 6 furlongs (1,207 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in July. The event was promoted to Group 3 status in 2006, having been classed previously at Listed level. It was sponsored by Shadwell Racing from 2009 to 2011. In 2012, it was sponsored by Chrisbeekracing.com and run as the Chrisbeekracing.com Stakes. It has been sponsored since 2016 by Bet365. The Hackwood Stakes is currently held on the second day of Newbury's Summer Festival meeting, the same day as the Weatherbys Super Sprint. Newbury Racecourse
Newbury Racecourse is a racecourse and events venue in the civil parish of Greenham, adjoining the town of Newbury in Berkshire, England. It has courses for flat races and over jumps. It hosts one of Great Britain's 36 annual Group 1 flat races, the Lockinge Stakes. History The racecourse held its first race meeting on 26/27 September 1905 at its current location, in the Greenham area on the south-east side of Newbury, West Berkshire. The first recorded racing at Newbury took place in 1805 with "Newbury Races", an annual two-day race meeting at Enborne Heath. The meeting lasted until 1811 when it transferred to Woodhay Heath until 1815. Newbury Racecourse didn't come into existence for another 90 years when Kingsclere trainer, John Porter proposed a new racecourse at Newbury. Jim Crowley (jockey)
Jim Crowley is a flat jockey riding in Great Britain and was British flat racing Champion Jockey in 2016. History Jim Crowley (Born 14 July 1978) comes from Ascot, Berkshire, Ascot and after beginning his horse racing career as an amateur flat race jockey he switched to National Hunt racing, riding for the stable of Sue Smith (trainer), Sue Smith. He rode approximately 300 winners in National Hunt racing before returning to Flat racing and riding for his sister-in-law, Amanda Perrett, at Pulborough. In 2010 he became stable jockey for Ralph Beckett. Crowley won his first British champion jockeys' title in 2016, beating the 2015 champion, Silvestre de Sousa, into second place and breaking the record for most winners ridden in a month with 46 victories in September. Ray Cochrane
Ray Cochrane (born 18 June 1957 in Banbridge, County Down, Northern Ireland) is a retired Northern Irish horse racing jockey and current sports agent. Cochrane was the winning jockey in three of the five British Classic Races: the 1000 Guineas Stakes and Epsom Oaks on Midway Lady, trained by Ben Hanbury in 1986, and the Epsom Derby on Kahyasi for his retained stable of Luca Cumani in 1988. Cochrane was also second in the 2000 Guineas Stakes on Chief Singer in 1984 and won the Group 1 July Cup at Newmarket and Sussex Stakes at Goodwood on the same horse. Cochrane received a Flat Jockey Special Recognition Lester Award in 2000. Cochrane received the Queen's Commendation for Bravery in 2002 for saving the life of fellow jockey Frankie Dettori following a plane crash in 2000. Geoff Lewis
Geoff Lewis (born 21 December 1935) is a Welsh retired jockey who was born in Talgarth, Breconshire. He moved to London with his family (he was one of thirteen children) in 1946. After initially working as a hotel page boy, he started his racing career as an apprentice with Ron Smyth, who was a trainer in Epsom. He will be best remembered as the jockey who won the 1,000 Guineas, 2,000 Guineas, Epsom Oaks (twice), Coronation Cup, and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Most watchers of the sport of horse racing would consider that his greatest moment came in 1971 when he rode Mill Reef to win The Derby. He was regarded as one of Europe's leading jockeys between 1953 and 1979. Geoff Lewis retired as a jockey in 1979, after which he applied for a trainer's licence and began to train at Thirty Acre Barn, near Epsom racecourse. Arthur Jeremy Tree (21 December 1925 – 7 March 1993) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse trainer. Background Born into a prominent London family, Tree was always known by his middle name, Jeremy. His father was Ronald Tree, an American-born British journalist, investor and Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) for Harborough in Leicestershire. Steve Cauthen (born May 1, 1960) is a retired American jockey. In 1977 he became the first jockey to win over $6 million in a year working with agent Lenny Goodman, and in 1978 he became the youngest jockey to win the U. S. Triple Crown. William Haggas
William Haggas is a British Thoroughbred racehorse trainer, based at Somerville Lodge stables in Newmarket, Suffolk. He is the son-in-law of the multiple champion jockey Lester Piggott. He was educated at Harrow and played cricket at Lord's for Harrow against Eton in 1977, 1978 and 1979, captaining the side in the 1979 match. He started his working life in his father's textile factory, but quit after three months and headed to Newmarket. Before taking out a licence in his own right, he learnt his trade with John Winter and Mark Prescott. He trained his first winner in 1987. Hughie Morrison
Hughie Morrison is a British racehorse trainer who specialises in training horses competing in Flat racing. Morrison is the son of James Morrison, 2nd Baron Margadale, and was educated at Eton College. He was advised by the trainer Henry Cecil to see life outside racing before training and initially worked in the pharmaceutical industry and ran a lighting company in Manchester. He began training horses in 1997 having bought a stable at East Ilsley the previous September, after a two-year period as assistant trainer to Paul Cole. Tim Easterby (born 13 September 1961) is a British racehorse trainer based in North Yorkshire. Easterby took over the Habton Grange stables in North Yorkshire from his father, Peter Easterby, in February 1996. He has trained a Classic winner, Bollin Eric, in the 2002 St Leger Stakes at Doncaster and had Group 1 wins with Pipalong, Fayr Jag, Somnus and Winter Power. Luca M. Cumani (born 7 April 1949, in Milan, Italy) is an Italian thoroughbred horse trainer and breeder. He trained at Bedford House Stables in Newmarket from 1976 to 2019.
