Habit (1997 Film)
''Habit'' is a 1997 vampire horror film starring Larry Fessenden, who also wrote and directed the film. Plot Sam is a self-destructive, vaguely artistic New York bohemian who has recently lost his father and his long-time girlfriend. At a Halloween party he meets a mysterious, beautiful, androgynous woman named Anna (Meredith Snaider). He embarks on a kinky, sex-charged relationship with her; but soon he suffers from a mysterious illness, and eventually comes to believe that Anna is a vampire. Larry Fessenden
Laurence T. Fessenden (born March 23, 1963) is an American actor, producer, writer, director, film editor, and cinematographer. He is the founder of the New York based independent production outfit Glass Eye Pix. His writer/director credits include No Telling' (written with Beck Underwood, 1991), ''Habit'' (1997), ''Wendigo'' (2001), and '' The Last Winter'' (written with Robert Leaver, 2006), which is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. He has also directed the television feature '' Beneath'' (2013), an episode of the NBC TV series '' Fear Itself'' (2008) entitled " Skin and Bones", and a segment of the anthology horror-comedy film '' The ABCs of Death 2'' (2014). Glass Eye Pix is an American independent film studio based in New York City, New York known primarily for producing horror films. History Film director Larry Fessenden founded Glass Eye Pix on November 2, 1986 in order to copyright his own films, including ''Habit, Wendigo'' and ''The Last Winter''. The name came from a glass eye one of his friends gave to him as a gift, combined with the old lingo from the trade magazine Variety which called movies "pix". The company eventually grew to encompass others' works as Fessenden began to mentor younger filmmakers. Glass Eye Pix's low-budget horror banner, Scareflix, was designed to create lean budgeted, auteur-driven films from new directors. Austin Film Festival (AFF), founded in 1994, is an organization in Austin, Texas, that focuses on writers’ creative contributions to film. Initially, AFF was called the Austin Heart of Film Screenwriters Conference and functioned to launch the careers of screenwriters, who historically have been underrepresented within the film industry. AFF is known for its annual October Austin Film Festival & Conference. The Conference was the first event of its kind, bringing professional and amateur screenwriters together to celebrate the role of screenplays in filmmaking and host conversations focusing on craft and on particular films and television series. The Independent Spirit Awards (abbreviated Spirit Awards and originally known as the FINDIE or Friends of Independents Awards), founded in 1984, are awards dedicated to independent filmmakers. Winners were typically presented with Poly(methyl methacrylate), acrylic glass pyramids containing suspended shoestrings representing the bare budgets of independent films. Since 2006, winners have received a metal trophy depicting a bird with its wings spread sitting atop of a pole with the shoestrings from the previous design wrapped around the pole. Vampire films have been a staple in world cinema since the era of silent films, so much so that the depiction of vampires in popular culture is strongly based upon their depiction in films throughout the years. The most popular cinematic adaptation of vampire fiction has been from Bram Stoker's 1897 novel ''Dracula'', with over 170 versions to date. Running a distant second are adaptations of the 1872 novel ''Carmilla'' by Sheridan Le Fanu.
