HNLMS Onverschrokken (M886)
HNLMS ''Onverschrokken'' (A856), also known as HNLMS ''Mercuur'' (A856), was an of the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNN). Soon after being taken into service of the RNN, the ship was put into reserve alongside the rest of the minesweepers of the ''Onversaagd'' class.Roetering (1997), p. 131. Later, in 1973 she was renamed as HNLMS ''Mercuur'' (A856) and used as submarine support ship till her decommissioning in 1987. Nowadays, she is a museum ship that can be visited in Vlissingen. History The former submarine support ship ex HNLMS ''Mercuur'' was originally built as HNLMS ''Onverschrokken'', as part of the ''Aggressive''-class wooden ocean minesweepers with the yard number MSO 483. These minesweepers were built in the early 1950s in the United States and were equipped with an AN/SQQ-14 minehunting sonar to locate moored or bottom naval mines. Scheveningen
Scheveningen is one of the eight districts of The Hague, Netherlands, as well as a subdistrict (''wijk'') of that city. Scheveningen is a modern seaside resort with a long, sandy beach, an esplanade, a pier, and a lighthouse. The beach is popular for water sports such as windsurfing and Kitesurfing, kiteboarding. The harbour is used for both fishing and tourism. History The earliest reference to the name ''Sceveninghe'' goes back to around 1280. The first inhabitants may have been Anglo-Saxons. Naval Mine
A naval mine is a self-contained explosive device placed in water to damage or destroy surface ships or submarines. Unlike depth charges, mines are deposited and left to wait until they are triggered by the approach of, or contact with, any vessel or a particular vessel type, akin to anti-infantry vs. anti-vehicle mines. Den Helder
Den Helder () is a municipality and a city in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. Den Helder occupies the northernmost point of the North Holland peninsula. It is home to the country's main naval base. From here the Royal TESO ferryboat service operates the transportation link between Den Helder and the nearby Dutch Wadden island of Texel to the north. Etymology Before the year 1928 the official name of Den Helder was Helder. The origin of the name Helder is not entirely clear. The name Helder may have come from ''Helle/Helde'', which means "hill" or "hilly grounds", or from ''Helre'', which means a sandy ridge. HNLMS ''Mercuur'' (A900) is a submarine support ship of the Royal Netherlands Navy. The ship was built and designed specially to support the Dutch submarines. She entered service on 21 August 1987, and is the only surface vessel attached to the Dutch submarine service. History The former torpedo ship HNLMS ''Mercuur'' was in need of replacement at beginning of the early 1970s. She was a former minesweeper of the and re-purposed in 1972 as a submarine support ship. The ship, however, was due her age not adequately equipped to fulfill the tasks the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNN) wanted to use her for, so in 1977 the RNN started to make plans and designs for her replacement. Mutual Defense Assistance Program
The Mutual Defense Assistance Act was a United States Act of Congress signed by President Harry S. Truman on 6 October 1949. For US Foreign policy, it was the first U.S. military foreign aid legislation of the Cold War era, and initially to Europe. The Act followed Truman's signing of the Economic Cooperation Act (the Marshall Plan), on April 3, 1948, which provided non-military, economic reconstruction and development aid to Europe. The 1949 Act was amended and reauthorized on July 26, 1950.
