HMS Rorqual (S02)
HMS ''Rorqual'' (S02) was a ''Porpoise''-class submarine launched in 1956. She was built by the Vickers shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England. The boat was named for both the rorqual, a family of whale, and the earlier Second World War-era submarine of the same name. Design and construction The ''Porpoise''-class was the first class of operational submarines built for the Royal Navy after the end of the Second World War, and were designed to take advantage of experience gained by studying German Type XXI U-boats and British wartime experiments with the submarine , which was modified by streamlining and fitting a bigger battery. Vickers-Armstrongs Limited was a British engineering conglomerate formed by the merger of the assets of Vickers Limited and Sir W G Armstrong Whitworth & Company in 1927. The majority of the company was nationalised in the 1960s and 1970s, with the remainder being divested as Vickers plc in 1977. History Vickers merged with the Tyneside-based engineering company Armstrong Whitworth, founded by William Armstrong, to become Vickers-Armstrongs. Armstrong Whitworth and Vickers had developed along similar lines, expanding into various military sectors and produced a whole suite of military products. Draft (ship)
The draft or draught of a ship's hull is the vertical distance between the waterline and the bottom of the hull (keel). The draught of the vessel is the maximum depth of any part of the vessel, including appendages such as rudders, propellers and drop keels if deployed. Draft determines the minimum depth of water a ship or boat can safely navigate. The related term air draft is the maximum height of any part of the vessel above the water. The more heavily a vessel is loaded, the deeper it sinks into the water, and the greater its draft. After construction, the shipyard creates a table showing how much water the vessel displaces based on its draft and the density of the water (salt or fresh). The draft can also be used to determine the weight of cargo on board by calculating the total displacement of water, accounting for the content of the ship's bunkers, and using Archimedes' principle. USS Endurance (AM 435)
USS ''Endurance'' (AM-435/MSO-435) was an ''Agile''-class minesweeper in service with the United States Navy from 1954 to 1972. She was scrapped in 1974. History The second ship to be named ''Endurance'' by the Navy, ''AM-435'' was launched 8 August 1952 by J. M. Martinac Shipbuilding Corp., Tacoma, Washington; sponsored by Miss Gerry A. Borovich; and commissioned 19 May 1954. She was reclassified ''MSO-435'' on 7 February 1955. On 21 April 1954, ''Endurance'' arrived at Long Beach, California, her home port, and began training operations along the southern coast of California. A minesweeper is a small warship designed to remove or detonate naval mines. Using various mechanisms intended to counter the threat posed by naval mines, minesweepers keep waterways clear for safe shipping. Dedicated minesweepers, however, only appeared many centuries later during the Crimean War, where they were deployed by the British.
