HMS Faulknor (1914)
HMS ''Faulknor'' was a British destroyer of the First World War. She was purchased by the Royal Navy whilst still under construction in Britain for the Chilean Navy who had ordered her in 1912 as part of the . She was renamed after the Faulknor family of British nineteenth century naval officers. ''Faulknor'' was a large destroyer leader that served initially in the Grand Fleet, and took part in the Battle of Jutland in 1916. At the end of 1916, she transferred to the Dover Patrol, a force tasked with preventing German raiding craft gaining access to the English Channel. ''Faulknor'' carried out both defensive patrols and offensive operations against the coastline of German-held Belgium, taking part in both the First and Second Ostend Raid in the spring of 1918. In 1920, following the end of the war, ''Faulknor'' and her surviving sisters were all returned to Chile, where she served as ''Almirante Riveros''. East Cowes
East Cowes is a town and civil parish in the north of the Isle of Wight, on the east bank of the River Medina, next to its west bank neighbour Cowes. The two towns are connected by the Cowes Floating Bridge, a chain ferry operated by the Isle of Wight Council. The Faulknor family was an English family from Northamptonshire, of which several generations served as officers in the Royal Navy. William Faulknor William Faulknor (d. 25 February 1725) first appears as fourth lieutenant of the '' Royal William'' in 1695. On 17 March 1707, he was promoted to the rank of captain, and given command of the 80-gun ship of the line . The draft or draught of a ship's hull is the vertical distance between the waterline and the bottom of the hull (keel). The draught of the vessel is the maximum depth of any part of the vessel, including appendages such as rudders, propellers and drop keels if deployed. Length between perpendiculars (often abbreviated as p/p, p.p., pp, LPP, LBP or Length BPP) is the length of a ship along the summer load line from the forward surface of the stem, or main bow perpendicular member, to the after surface of the sternpost, or main stern perpendicular member. HMS ''Pique'' was a 38-gun fifth rate frigate of the Royal Navy. She had formerly served with the French Navy, initially as the ''Fleur-de-Lys'', and later as the ''Pique''. Robert Faulknor the younger (1763–1795) was an 18th-century Royal Navy officer, part of the Faulknor naval dynasty. He was court-martialled (but acquitted) and died in an action off Guadeloupe in the eastern Caribbean Sea. The Second Ostend Raid (officially known as Operation VS) was the later of two failed attempts made during the spring of 1918 by the United Kingdom's Royal Navy to block the channels leading to the Belgian port of Ostend as a part of its conflict with the German Empire during World War I.
