HMS Pique (1795)
HMS ''Pique'' was a 38-gun fifth rate frigate of the Royal Navy. She had formerly served with the French Navy, initially as the ''Fleur-de-Lys'', and later as the ''Pique''. HMS ''Blanche'' captured her in 1795 in a battle that left the ''Blanche''s commander, Captain Robert Faulknor, dead. HMS ''Pique'' was taken into service under her only British captain, David Milne, but served for just three years with the Royal Navy before being wrecked in an engagement with the French ship ''Seine'' in 1798. The ''Seine'' had been spotted heading for a French port and ''Pique'' and another British ship gave chase. All three ships ran aground after a long and hard-fought pursuit. The arrival of a third British ship ended French resistance, but while the ''Seine'' and ''Jason'' were both refloated, attempts to save ''Pique'' failed; she bilged and had to be abandoned. Robert Dodd (artist)
Robert Dodd (1748–1815) was a British marine painter and aquatint engraver. He is known for his works on the French Revolutionary Wars. Life and family Born as one of three sons of Alexander Dodd, his younger brother was the engineer and painter Ralph Dodd. He married Mary Fulton (b. 1748) on 1 November 1772. He died in early 1815 and was buried on 20 February at St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney. Style Dodd started his career as a landscape painter, but after gaining some recognition in this field, specialised in marine scenes. Living in Wapping, London, he had plenty of material to hand in the way of ships, docks and wharfs, and much of his work includes scenes of the River Thames and naval dockyards. David Milne (Royal Navy Officer)
Admiral Sir David Milne GCB FRSE (May 1763 – 5 May 1845) was a Scottish Royal Navy admiral. Life Milne was born in Musselburgh, Midlothian, Scotland, the son of Susan Vernor and David Milne, an Edinburgh merchant. He entered the Royal Navy as a midshipman in 1779. He served in the West Indies from 1779 to 1783, seeing action in the Caribbean during the American Revolutionary War and in Lord Howe's final relief of the French and Spanish siege of Gibraltar in 1782. From 1783 to 1793, he served in the East Indies. Promoted to commander, he defeated a French division off Puerto Rico on 5 June 1795, and, in 1796, he participated in the capture of the Dutch colonies of Demerara, Essequibo and Berbice, becoming the British governor of Netherlands Guiana. A capstan is a vertical- axled rotating machine developed for use on sailing ships to multiply the pulling force of seamen when hauling ropes, cables, and hawsers. The principle is similar to that of the windlass, which has a horizontal axle.
