HMCS Nootka (J35)
HMCS ''Nootka'' was a that served in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1938–1945. She saw service during the Second World War as a local minesweeper working out of Halifax, Nova Scotia. She was named for Nootka Sound. In 1943 she was renamed HMCS ''Nanoose'' to allow the unit name ''Nootka'' to be used by the destroyer . Following the war the ship was sold for mercantile use, becoming the tugboat ''Sung Ling''. The ship's registry was deleted in 1993. The Tribal class, or ''Afridi'' class, were a class of destroyers built for the Royal Navy, Royal Canadian Navy and Royal Australian Navy that saw service in World War II. Laying the keel or laying down is the formal recognition of the start of a ship's construction. It is often marked with a ceremony attended by dignitaries from the shipbuilding company and the ultimate owners of the ship.
