Hélène Baillargeon
Hélène Baillargeon (1916–1997) was a Canadian singer, actor, and folklorist probably best known as the host of the CBC Television show ''Chez Hélène'' from 1959 to 1973. She was born in Saint-Martin, Quebec, on 28 August 1916 and studied singing in Quebec City and New York City and then in Montreal with Alfred La Liberté. She went on to work as a researcher with Marius Barbeau at the National Museum of Canada in Ottawa (later the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau). In 1944, Baillargeon married André Côté, a Crown attorney in Montreal. She performed and hosted shows on CBC Radio and Television such as ''Le réveil rural'' (1951–1955), ''Songs de chez nous'' (1952–1955), and ''Cap aux sorciers'' (1955–1958). Folkways Records was a record label founded by Moses Asch that documented folk, world, and children's music. It was acquired by the Smithsonian Institution in 1987 and is now part of Smithsonian Folkways. History The Folkways Records & Service Co., and its music publishing subsidiary Folkways Music Publishers, Inc., were founded by Moses Asch and Marian Distler in 1948 in New York City. Harold Courlander was editor of the ''Folkways Ethnic Library'' at the time and is credited with coming up with the name "Folkways" for the label. Asch sought to record and document sounds and music from everywhere in the world. From 1948 until Asch's death in 1986, Folkways Records released 2,168 albums. Alan Mills (born Albert Miller; September 7, 1912 or 1913 – June 14, 1977 ) was a Canadians, Canadian folksinger, writer, and actor. He was best known for popularizing Canadian folk music, and for his original song, ''There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly, I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly''. He appeared on several radio and television programs and in movies. Career As a young man, Mills worked as a newspaperman. He left this work in about 1940 and took a job in radio. He hosted a show for CBC radio on which he played Canadian folk music. Mills began singing and recording traditional music from Canada, accompanying himself on guitar. His first album, ''Let's Sing a Little'', was released by RCA Victor. He composed the classic folk song ''I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly'' (with lyrics by Rose Bonne) which was later recorded by Burl Ives, Peter Paul and Mary and many others.
