''Hélène'' is a drame in four acts and five tableaux of 1891, with French words by Paul Delair and incidental music by André Messager.Wagstaff J. André Messager. In: ''The New Grove Dictionary of Opera.'' Macmillan, London and New York, 1997. The story, found by the author in the fait divers of a newspaper concerns a child, Hélène, who, learning that her father has been murdered by his mother, swears vengeance; there are shades of ''Hamlet''. Paul Delair
Paul Alexandre Delair (24 October 1842 – 19 January 1894) was a 19th-century French playwright, poet, chansonnier and novelist. An administrator at the Académie des Beaux-Arts, he took an active part to the organization of the Exposition universelle of 1889. His plays were presented on the most important Parisian stages of the 19th-century, including the Théâtre du Vaudeville and the Comédie-Française. André Messager
André Charles Prosper Messager (; 30 December 1853 – 24 February 1929) was a French composer, organist, pianist and conductor. His compositions include eight ballets and thirty opéra comique, opéras comiques, opérettes and other stage works, among which his ballet ''Les Deux Pigeons (ballet), Les Deux Pigeons'' (1886) and opéra comique ''Véronique (operetta), Véronique'' (1898) have had lasting success; ''Les p'tites Michu, Les P'tites Michu'' (1897) and ''Monsieur Beaucaire (opera), Monsieur Beaucaire'' (1919) were also popular internationally. The term is less frequently applied to film music, with such music being referred to instead as the film score or soundtrack. Charles-François Gounod (; ; 17 June 181818 October 1893), usually known as Charles Gounod, was a French composer. Ambroise Thomas
Charles Louis Ambroise Thomas (; 5 August 1811 – 12 February 1896) was a French composer and teacher, best known for his operas ''Mignon'' (1866) and ''Hamlet'' (1868). Born into a musical family, Thomas was a student at the Conservatoire de Paris, winning France's top music prize, the Prix de Rome. ''Les Annales du Théâtre et de la Musique'' ("The Annals of Theatre and Music") was an annual French periodical which covered French dramatic and lyric theatre for 42 years, from 1875 to 1916. The volumes also covered concert series and necrology. It was co-edited by Édouard Noël (1848–1926) and Edmond Stoullig (1845–1918) and was published in Paris by Charpentier from 1876 to 1895 and Berger-Levrault in 1896.
