Finnish Gunboat Hämeenmaa
''Hämeenmaa'' was a gunboat that served in the Finnish Navy during World War II. She was built in 1917. As the ship had changed hands many times during the turbulent last years of World War I she had been renamed many times: In Russian service, she was called ''Pingvin'', later, in German service, her name was ''Wulf''. Finally the Germans handed her over to the Finns in 1920, who renamed her ''Hämeenmaa''. After World War II, she served as a trawler in the Baltic Sea. She was scrapped in 1953. Interwar period ''Hämeenmaa'' took part in the tragic autumn training cruise of the Finnish Navy in 1925 when the torpedo boat ''S2'' foundered in heavy seas. ''Hämeenmaa'' started leaking during the storm and when it finally reached the dock at Veitsiluoto its rear deck was already at sea level. Finnish Frigate Hämeenmaa
''Hämeenmaa'' was a Finnish . The class was called the ''Hämeenmaa'' class in Finland since the ship had some unique modifications (i.e. British submarine hunting equipment). The two 37 mm twin guns were also replaced with two 40 mm single AA guns in 1975. ''Hämeenmaa'' was rebuilt into a minelayer in the 1980s. A communications central replaced the Hedgehog mounting. The torpedo tubes were removed. A bow twin 30 mm AK-230 was added. ''Hämeenmaa'' was decommissioned in 1985. Operational service The ''Hämeenmaa''s were acquired from the Soviet Union in the mid-1960s, to be used as gun training ships. They formed the "Escort Flotilla" ( fi, Saattajalaivue) together with the s. Hämeenmaa-class Minelayer
The ''Hämeenmaa''-class minelayers ( fi, Hämeenmaa-luokan miinalaiva) is a two vessel strong class of coastal minelayers, used by the Finnish Navy. The ships have a steel hull and aluminum alloy superstructure. The class has an ice operating classification of ICE-1A and can operate year-round in ice up to 40 cm thick. The design included some first attempts on stealth technology in the Finnish Navy. During a crisis the main task for the ''Hämeenmaa''-class ships is minelaying, but the vessels can also act as escort, transport and depot ships. History The contract for the ''Hämeenmaa'' class was originally awarded to Wärtsilä Marine, but following its bankruptcy the contract was transferred to Hollming.
