Hypnodendrales is an order of mosses. Description Species in the order are robust pleurocarpous mosses that are epiphytic. They are generally characterized by basally reiterating stems or stipes with secondary branching towards the apex. The order is mostly restricted to the Southern Hemisphere. ''Hypnodendron comosum'', commonly known as palm moss or palm tree moss, is a ground moss which can be divided into two varieties: ''Hypnodendron comosum'' var. ''comosum'' and ''Hypnodendron comosum'' var. ''sieberi''. Both ''Hypnodendron'' varieties most commonly grow in damp locations in the temperate rainforest, temperate and tropical rainforests of New South Wales, Victoria (Australia), Victoria, and Tasmania in southern Australia and in New Zealand. This "miniature forest" dendroid species is viewed by David Meagher and Bruce A. Fuhrer, Bruce Fuhrer in their publication ''A Field Guide to the Mosses and Allied Plants of Southern Australia'' as one of the most beautiful and unique species of mosses in the southern region of Australia. Order (biology)
Order ( la, wikt:ordo#Latin, ordo) is one of the eight major hierarchical taxonomic ranks in Linnaean taxonomy. It is classified between Family_(biology), family and Class_(biology), class. Epiphytic
An epiphyte is an organism that grows on the surface of a plant and derives its moisture and nutrients from the air, rain, water (in marine environments) or from debris accumulating around it. The plants on which epiphytes grow are called phorophytes. Epiphytes take part in nutrient cycles and add to both the diversity and biomass of the ecosystem in which they occur, like any other organism. They are an important source of food for many species. Typically, the older parts of a plant will have more epiphytes growing on them.
