Hyphen Press
Hyphen Press is a London publisher of books on design and typography. Hyphen Press was founded by Robin Kinross in 1980, but has published nearly all of its books beginning in the 1990s. Hyphen Press has produced about thirty books on a diverse range of topics, but most of its most important publications are devoted to the topic of typography. Robin Kinross
Robin Kinross (born 1949) is an author and publisher on the topic of visual communication and typography. His most significant work is ''Modern Typography.'' He is a proprietor of Hyphen Press, which published books on design and typography from 1980 to 2017. Kinross did undergraduate and graduate studies at the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication at the University of Reading. His graduate work from 1979 was titled ''Otto Neurath's contribution to visual communication 1925-45: the history, graphic language and theory of Isotype'', but stayed unpublished. He moved to London in 1982. In the 1980s he contributed content to publications such as ''Blueprint'', '' Baseline'' and '' Eye''. Kinross started Hyphen Press in 1980. Princeton Architectural Press
Princeton Architectural Press is a small press publisher, specializing in books on architecture, design, photography, landscape, and visual culture, with over 1,000 titles on its backlist. In 2013, it added a line of stationery products, including notebooks and notecards; the following year it began publishing children's books. The press was founded in 1981 in Princeton, New Jersey, by Kevin Lippert, who was then studying architecture at Princeton University. In 1985, it moved to New York City, where it operated for years in the East Village neighborhood. In 2014, it moved again, to Hudson, N.Y., where it also runs a retail store, Paper + Goods. Typography
Typography is the art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable and appealing when displayed. The arrangement of type involves selecting typefaces, point sizes, line lengths, line-spacing ( leading), and letter-spacing (tracking), as well as adjusting the space between pairs of letters (kerning). The term ''typography'' is also applied to the style, arrangement, and appearance of the letters, numbers, and symbols created by the process. Christopher Burke (design Writer)
Christopher Burke (born 1967) is a British writer on typography and a typeface designer. Burke worked at Monotype before earning a PhD in Typography & Graphic Communication at the University of Reading in 1995. From 1996 to 2001 he taught at the University of Reading, where he planned and conceived the MA in typeface design. He is probably best known for his 1998 book on the typographer Paul Renner. Burke's typefaces include Celeste, Celeste Sans, Parable and Pragma. Paul Renner
Paul Friedrich August Renner (9 August 1878 – 25 April 1956) was a German typeface designer, author, and founder of the Master School for Germany's Printers in Munich. In 1927, he designed the Futura typeface, which became one of the most successful and most-used types of the 20th century. Renner was born in Wernigerode, and died in Hödingen. He had a strict Protestant upbringing, being educated in a 19th-century Gymnasium. He was brought up to have a sense of leadership, duty and responsibility. He disliked abstract art and many forms of modern culture, such as jazz, cinema, and dancing. But equally, he admired the functionalist strain in modernism. Thus, Renner can be seen as a bridge between the traditional (19th century) and the modern (20th century). He attempted to fuse the Gothic and the roman typefaces. Anthony Froshaug
Anthony Froshaug (1920–1984) was an English typographer, designer and teacher, born in London to a Norwegian father and English mother. Influenced by ideas of European modernism, particularly the work of Jan Tschichold, Froshaug is considered by some to be the most convincing exponent of modern typography in Britain. Anthony Froshaug's archive is located at the University of Brighton Design Archives. A significant collection of Froshaug’s printed ephemera, representing his work between 1945 and 1965 is held at St Bride Library in London. This material originally formed the basis of a retrospective exhibition held at Watford College of Technology in 1965. St Bride Library also has a number of original letterpress formes relating to Froshaug’s work. Harry Carter (typographer)
Harry Graham Carter (27 March 1901 – 10 March 1982) was an English typographer, translator and writer. He was a well-known historian of type. He was the father of type designer Matthew Carter. Biography Carter studied at the progressive Bedales School (where he was a friend of John Rothenstein), and at The Queen's College, Oxford "where he became competent in French, German, Spanish, and Russian". (He would later learn Arabic, and design a Hebrew font.) Though he was studying law, Carter became interested in typography and bought a printing press. His first work with type came in 1928 and 1929 as an apprentice at the Monotype Corporation. Jost Hochuli
Jost Hochuli (born 8 June 1933 in St. Gallen, Switzerland) is a Swiss graphic designer known for his book designs. He is also the author of ''Detail in Typography'', which has been translated into several languages. Early career Jost Hochuli attended the school of arts and crafts in St. Gallen from 1952 to 1954 and then worked from 1954 to 1955 as an apprentice with Rudolf Hostettler at the Zollikofer & Co. AG printing house, St. Gallen. He completed an apprenticeship as a typographer from 1955 to 1958 partly at the Zollikofer press and partly in typesetting class at the Zurich School of Applied Arts, where he also attended typesetting courses with Walter Käch. Gerrit Noordzij
Gerrit Noordzij (2 April 1931 – 17 March 2022) was a Dutch typographer, typeface designer, and author. He started teaching letters and calligraphy at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague in 1960. Motivated to make type accessible to his students, he identified the stroke of the pen as the central idea in the making of letter forms. What began as a method to make his students into better graphic designers grew, in various iterations and publications, into a comprehensive approach to type design. The contrast cube became an iconic model of his ideas. Noordzij recognised the possibilities of the computer in type design early on. He encouraged his students to not only study the pens and their shapes, but also adopt a critical view on making digital tools (and doing the math).
