''Hype'' is a board game published by Virgin Games, Ltd. in 1985 that simulates the rise of unknown rock bands in the music industry. Description ''Hype'' is a game in which each player begins a pop band and must take their band from performing local shows and recording demos to getting a record deal and flying to gigs on a jet-plane. The first player to get a Number 1 hit is the winner. History The game was conceived in 1980 by Steve Fairnie, lead singer for the British post-punk bands Writz and Techno Twins, The Technos. Fairnie recruited Willie Williams (set designer), Willie Williams, at the time the editor of ''Punty'' fanzine but soon to become the set designer and lighting director for U2. Together, Fairnie and Williams designed the game, and pitched the idea to new games publisher Virgin Games. The Gamesys Group is an online software development and gaming business. It was listed on the London Stock Exchange until it was acquired by the U.S. casino operator, Bally's Corporation, in October 2021. History The company was founded in by Andrew Dixon, Noel Hayden, Robin Tombs and a small team of software developers in 2001. Gamesys acquired Virgin Games in January 2013. It then sold its Jackpotjoy brand to The Intertain Group, for a minimum of £425.8 million in February 2015. In September 2019 JPJ Group carried out a reverse takeover of Gamesys and subsequently changed its name to Gamesys Group. (The acquirer, which was a Canadian online gaming operator established as The Intertain Group in 2014, had become known as Jackpotjoy in January 2017 and then as JPJ Group in June 2018). Steve Fairnie
Stephen Angus Fairnie (21 February 1951 – 22 February 1993) was a British musician, artist and actor, the frontman of the post-punk band Writz, and as one half, with his wife Bev Sage, of the 1980s pop outfit Techno Twins (later just The Technos). Career Born in Fraserburgh and raised in Bristol, Fairnie excelled in fine art, eventually graduating from London's Royal College of Art with an MA in Sculpture (contemporaries included Turner Prize winner Tony Cragg). He began the acoustic gospel duo Fish Co with fellow singer-songwriter Steve Rowles and released the albums ''Can't Be Bad'' in 1975 and ''Beneath the Laughter'' in 1978, the latter with a full backing band - now including Fairnie's wife Bev Sage - that would form the nucleus of their subsequent project Writz.
