Hymus House
Hymus House is a State Register of Heritage Places-listed Victorian bungalow style house in East Rockingham, Western Australia. The building is part of the East Rockingham Heritage Precinct, which also includes other State Register of Heritage Places, such as the Chesterfield Inn, Day Cottage and the Bell Cottage ruin. History The Hymus family were among the first settlers in East Rockingham in the 1850s. Daniel Hymus (1835–1920) and his wife Fanny (née Bell) (1848–1913) were involved in the establishment and running of the Rockingham Hotel, then named the Port Hotel. The couple purchased the land on which Hymus House now stands in 1878 and lived in an earlier building at the site. The current house was built in 1895 by their son Daniel (1876–1932) and the property stayed in the family until 1935, when it was sold to farmer Joseph Stokes, who converted it to a dairy. Victorian architecture is a series of architectural revival styles in the mid-to-late 19th century. ''Victorian'' refers to the reign of Queen Victoria (1837–1901), called the Victorian era, during which period the styles known as Victorian were used in construction. However, many elements of what is typically termed "Victorian" architecture did not become popular until later in Victoria's reign, roughly from 1850 and later. Mandurah Road
Mandurah Road is the name given to two roads in the cities of Perth and Mandurah, Western Australia, which link together at Stakehill Road, Karnup. Route description The northern part starts in the Kwinana Beach industrial area. After 2 km and reaching the City of Rockingham boundary, it becomes a semi-rural single carriageway road which runs past wetlands east of Rockingham such as Lake Cooloongup and Lake Walyungup. It also provides access to the residential and rural-residential sections of the suburb of Baldivis. East Rockingham, Western Australia
East Rockingham is an industrial suburb within the Kwinana Industrial Area, part of Perth, and located within the City of Rockingham. History The suburb developed as a rural community in the 1850s when various pioneers took up land and settled in the area along Mandurah Road; however, the community declined following the opening of the port at Rockingham in 1872. The Rockingham Road Board's offices were located in East Rockingham between 1905 and 1929. The Stephenson- Hepburn Plan for Perth and Fremantle (1955) identified the strategic importance of the locality for industrial development. The suburb today contains various industrial developments, with LandCorp making plans to release more land for industrial purposes. The Water Corporation intends to construct a wastewater treatment facility in East Rockingham. The suburb was named Challenger for a period between 1992 and 1996. It is home to two caravan parks. The State Register of Heritage Places is the heritage register of historic sites in Western Australia deemed significant at the state level by the Heritage Council of Western Australia. History In the 1970s, following its establishment of the National Trust of Western Australia, the National Trust created a set of classified properties, and following legislation requiring inventories, Local Government authorities in Western Australia produced a subsequent set of Municipal Inventories, which then resulted in items then being included in the state register. Chesterfield Inn (Western Australia)
The Chesterfield Inn and its stables are State Register of Heritage Places-listed buildings in East Rockingham, Western Australia. The Inn was built in 1855 in the vernacular Queen Anne Revival style and is the oldest commercial building in its area. The former Inn and its stables are part of the East Rockingham Heritage Precinct, which also includes other State Register of Heritage Places, such as Bell Cottage ruin, Hymus House and Day Cottage. Day Cottage
Day Cottage, also referred to as Ellendale, is a State Register of Heritage Places-listed Victorian-style cottage in East Rockingham, Western Australia. The cottage is part of the East Rockingham Heritage Precinct. History Prior to the construction of Day Cottage, a small cottage stood at the site, with the land owned by prominent landholder Jabez White. White leased 40 acres of his land to a relative, William Day (1835–1917), in 1858 and Day, his wife Susan (1836–1929), and their oldest two children, Sarah Ann and James, settled on their new property. Susan Hymus, the sister of William Hymus and had come to the area with him, her mother, brothers and sisters in 1855 and had married William Day on 21 April 1857. Bell Cottage Ruin
The Bell Cottage ruin is a State Register of Heritage Places-listed ruined Victorian Georgian style cottage in East Rockingham, Western Australia. The ruin is on one of the earliest land grants in the Rockingham area and is one of the oldest structures in the area. It is associated with the Bell family, especially James and Jane Bell, early pioneers in the region. Jane Bell gained public attention in 1840 after the death of her child, conceived after being raped; she was incarcerated for two years on Rottnest Island. In 1876 James Bell was an eyewitness to the Fenian escape from Fremantle Gaol and raised the alarm. Rockingham Hotel (Western Australia)
The Rockingham Hotel is a historic hotel and pub in Rockingham, Western Australia, its origins dating back to 1886, when Rockingham was an important export location for Western Australian timber. The hotel was listed on the Western Australian State Register of Heritage Places in 2008 but de-listed in 2011. It remains on the City of Rockingham heritage list however. History First surveyed in 1847, Rockingham did not see any major development until 1872, when a jetty was built to export jarrah timber from Jarrahdale through the Rockingham port. During its peak, from 1878 to 1883, Rockingham accounted for more than half of Western Australia's timber exports. By 1903, timber exports from Rockingham had ceased, and the town became a holiday destination.
