''Hymns'' is a 1956 studio album by Tennessee Ernie Ford, released in 1957. It was the second-best-selling record in the United States in 1957. The album is one of the best selling of all time, and spent 277 weeks on the ''Billboard'' 200. The album was re-recorded in stereo in 1962 and assigned the catalog number ST 756, while the original 1957 mono recording remained in the Capitol catalog as T 756. The album appeared the same year that Ford launched his 5-year NBC television series, '' The Ford Show, Starring Tennessee Ernie Ford''. He closed each episode with a hymn. "Rock of Ages" is a popular Christian hymn written by the Reformed Anglican minister Augustus Toplady. History The first four lines for the 1st version of the 1st verse were published in ''The Gospel Magazine'' in October, 1775. The first publication in full was the following spring in the March, 1776 edition of ''The Gospel Magazine,'' with a revised first verse, plus three more verses. A slightly further revised version was published that summer in July 1776 in Toplady's hymnal ''Psalms & Hymns for Public and Private Worship.'' There is a popular story most hymnologists do not believe about the origin of this hymn text. "In the Garden" (sometimes rendered by its first line "I Come to the Garden Alone" is a gospel song written by American songwriter C. Austin Miles (1868–1946), a former pharmacist who served as editor and manager at Hall-Mack publishers for 37 years. According to Miles' great-granddaughter, the song was written "in a cold, dreary and leaky basement in Pitman, New Jersey that didn't even have a window in it let alone a view of a garden." The song was first published in 1912 and popularized during the Billy Sunday evangelistic campaigns of the early twentieth century by two members of his staff, Homer Rodeheaver and Virginia Asher. When They Ring Those Golden Bells (also known as There's a Land Beyond the River or When They Ring the Golden Bells) is a prominent American gospel and bluegrass song written in 1887 by Daniel de Marbelle, a European immigrant, veteran of the American Civil War and Mexican War, and circus leader. The song describes heaven as "beyond the river," a phrase found in the Bible in Ezra 4:11 and "golden bells" a reference found in Exodus 39:25. Marbelle was purportedly cheated out of the copyright to the song and died penniless. The copyright was acquired by the John Church Company, and the song was first known to be recorded in 1915 by the Imperial Quartet. "The Old Rugged Cross" is a popular hymn written in 1912 by American evangelist and song-leader George Bennard (1873–1958). History George Bennard was a native of Youngstown, Ohio, but was reared in Iowa. After his conversion in a Salvation Army meeting, he and his wife became brigade leaders before leaving the organization for the Methodist Church. As a Methodist evangelist, Bennard wrote the first verse of "The Old Rugged Cross" in Albion, Michigan, in the fall of 1912 as a response to ridicule that he had received at a revival meeting. Bennard traveled with Ed E. Mieras from Chicago to Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin where they held evangelistic meetings at the Friends Church from December 29, 1912 to January 12, 1913. Softly And Tenderly
"Softly and Tenderly" is a Christian hymn. It was composed and written by Will L. Thompson in 1880. Allegedly, when evangelist Dwight L. Moody was in the hospital barred from seeing visitors although Thompson had arrived, Moody insisted that Thompson be let in, whereupon Moody told him: :Will, I would rather have written "Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is Calling" than anything I have been able to do in my whole life. Thompson was a member of the Churches of Christ, where several of his hymns and gospel songs continue in use. "Softly and Tenderly" is the most widely known of his compositions and has circulated far beyond its origins in the American Restoration Movement. It is among the most prolifically translated gospel songs and has spread appealingly into the repertoire of various fellowships of Christendom. ''The Ford Show'' (also known as ''The Ford Show, Starring Tennessee Ernie Ford'' and ''The Tennessee Ernie Ford Show'') is an American variety program, starring singer and folk humorist Tennessee Ernie Ford, which aired on NBC on Thursday evenings from October 4, 1956, to June 29, 1961. The show was sponsored by the Ford Motor Company, whose founders shared a last name with the host but had no known relation. Beginning in September 1958, the show was telecast in color, and was broadcast from NBC Studios at 3000 W. Alameda Avenue in Burbank, California.
