Hylinae
Hylinae is a large subfamily of "tree frogs", family Hylidae. Classification The contents of this subfamily vary substantially according to the source. The Amphibian Species of the World follows the revision by Duellman and colleagues from 2016 based on molecular data and delimits the subfamily more narrowly than before, treating parts of former Hylinae as their own subfamilies. Following this classification, there were 18 genera totaling 174 species in the end of 2020. They are found North, Central, and the northmost South America, much of temperate Eurasia, Japan, and extreme northern Africa, however, only ''Hyla'' is found outside the Americas. The Wikipedia is following this classification. The AmphibiaWeb follows an older classification defining Hylinae more broadly, with several hundred species. At the end of 2020, the AmphibiaWeb lists 42 genera totaling 737 species. Amphibian Species of the World At the end of 2020, the Amphibian Species of the World includes the follo ...

Hylidae
Hylidae is a wide-ranging family of frogs commonly referred to as "tree frogs and their allies". However, the hylids include a diversity of frog species, many of which do not live in trees, but are terrestrial or semiaquatic. Taxonomy and systematics The earliest known fossils that can be assigned to this family are from the Cretaceous of India and the state of Wyoming in the United States. The common name of "tree frog" is a popular name for several species of the family Hylidae. However, the name "treefrog" is not unique to this family, also being used for many species in the family Rhacophoridae. The following genera are recognised in the family Hylidae: * Subfamily Hylinae ** Tribe Cophomantini *** '' Aplastodiscus'' – canebrake treefrogs *** ''Boana'' – gladiator treefrogs *** ''Bokermannohyla'' *** ''Hyloscirtus'' *** ''Myersiohyla'' *** ''Nesorohyla'' *** '' "Hyla" nicefori'' ** Tribe Dendropsophini ***''Dendropsophus'' *** '' Julianus'' *** ''Lysapsus'' †...

Charadrahyla
''Charadrahyla'' is a genus of frogs in the family Hylidae. It is endemic to tropical southern Mexico. The generic name was derived from Greek ''charadra'' ("ravine") and ''Hyla'', in reference to the habits of these frogs. Accordingly, common name ravine treefrogs has been coined for the genus. Taxonomy and systematics This genus was erected in 2005 following a major revision of the Hylidae. It corresponds to the former ''Charadrahyla taeniopus, Hyla taeniopus'' group as defined by in 1970. The genus was originally diagnosed using molecular markers; no morphological synapomorphy, synapomorphies supporting the new genus could be identified. The sister taxon of ''Charadrahyla'' is ''Megastomatohyla''. Five of the species in this genus were previously placed in the genus ''Hyla''. Two species were later species description, described as new in this genus, and another two were transferred from ''Exerodonta'' in 2018 based on molecular data. Description ''Charadrahyla'' are relativ ...

Rheohyla Miotympanum, WLF 2706 (A) 16 Sept 2009
''Rheohyla'' is a genus of frogs in the family Hylidae. As currently recognized, it is monotypic, containing only ''Rheohyla miotympanum'', also known as the small-eared hyla or small-eared treefrog. However, the nominal species likely is a complex of more than one species. It is endemic to eastern and central Mexico. The generic name refers to streams, the breeding habitat of this frog (from Greek meaning 'stream' combined with ''Hylas''). The specific name is derived from Greek , a diminutive prefix, together with Greek (='drum') and refers to the small tympanum. Taxonomy This genus was erected in 2016 to accommodate former ''Ecnomiohyla miotympanum''; AmphibiaWeb still uses this earlier classification. Faivovich and colleagues argued in 2018 that splitting ''Rheohyla miotympanum'' from '' Ecnomiohyla'' was not necessary on the grounds of obtaining monophyletic ''Ecnomiohyla'', but is nevertheless convenient because it allows associating ''Ecnomiohyla'' with several putativ ...

Megastomatohyla
''Megastomatohyla'' is a genus of frogs in the family Hylidae. They are endemic to the cloud forests of central Veracruz and Oaxaca, Mexico. All are rare species with restricted distributions. The generic name is derived from Greek ''mega'' (="large") and stem of the genitive ''stomatos'' (="mouth"), referring to the enlarged oral disc of the tadpoles, juxtaposed with ''Hyla'', the genus in which the four ''Megastomatohyla'' species were previously placed. Common name large-mouthed treefrogs has been coined for this genus. Taxonomy and characteristics ''Megastomatohyla'' was erected in 2005 as a part of a major revision of the Hylidae and corresponds to the former "''Hyla mixomaculata'' group". The delineation was based on molecular data. The only tentative morphological synapomorphy of the genus is the greatly enlarged oral disc of the tadpoles, which has 7–10 anterior rows and 10–11 posterior rows—in those species where this trait is known. ''Megastomatohyla'' are small ...

Ecnomiohyla
''Ecnomiohyla'', commonly known as fringe-limbed treefrogs or marvelous frogs, is a genus of frogs in the family Hylidae. This genus was erected in 2005 following a major revision of Hylidae. The ten original species in this genus (''E. rabborum'' and ''E. sukia'' are later discoveries) were previously placed in the genus ''Hyla''. The generic name ''Ecnomiohyla'' comes from Greek ''ecnomios'' ("marvelous" or "unusual") and Hylas, the companion of Hercules. Description Members of ''Ecnomiohyla'' are moderately sized to very large frogs with distinctive scalloped fringes of skin on the outer edges of their limbs and relatively immense hands and feet. They are found in the canopies of wet forested highlands of southern Mexico Mexico (Spanish: México), officially the United Mexican States, is a country in the southern portion of North America. Lysapsus
''Lysapsus'' is a genus of frogs in the family Hylidae found in South America east of the Andes. Their common name is harlequin frogs. Many frogs in ''Lysapsus'' have a paradoxical life cycle. They are most massive when they are older tadpoles and slightly smaller when they are adult frogs. Species There are four species: * ''Lysapsus bolivianus'' (Gallardo, 1961) * ''Lysapsus caraya'' (Gallardo, 1964) * ''Lysapsus laevis'' (Parker, 1935) * ''Lysapsus limellum'' (Cope, 1862) The status of ''Lysapsus bolivianus'' is unclear; it might be a subspecies of ''Lysapsus limellum''. Itapotihyla
''Itapotihyla'' is a genus of frogs in the family Hylidae. It is monotypic, being represented by the single species ''Itapotihyla langsdorffii'', commonly known as the ocellated treefrog. It is found in the Atlantic Forest biome of Brazil, with an isolated population in eastern Paraguay and adjacent Brazil and northeastern Argentina. Description ''Itapotihyla langsdorffii'' are relatively large treefrogs. They show sexual dimorphism, with females (mean snout-vent length ) being larger than males (). Reproduction Reproduction takes place in temporary and permanent pools inside rainforest. It is an explosive breeder with a mean brood size of over 6000 eggs. Breeding is associated with intense vocalization by males. In addition to vocalization, male–male interactions may involve grabbing and pushing and even direct physical combat. This kind of behaviour is more common in species where males are larger than females (see sexual selection in frogs). Trophic interactions Its diet ...

Hyla
''Hyla'' is a genus of frogs in the tree frog family Hylidae. As traditionally defined, it was a wastebasket genus with more than 300 species found in Europe, Asia, Africa, and across the Americas. After a major revision of the family most of these have been moved to other genera so that ''Hyla'' now only contains 17 extant (living) species from Europe, northern Africa and Asia. The earliest known fossil member of this genus is †''Hyla swanstoni'' from the Eocene of Saskatchewan, Canada, but its designation to ''Hyla'' happened before the major revision, meaning that its position needs confirmation. The genus was established by Josephus Nicolaus Laurenti in 1768. It was named after Hylas in Greek mythology, the companion of Hercules. The name is unusual in that – though Laurenti knew that Hylas was male – the name is unambiguously treated in the feminine grammatical gender for reasons unknown. The etymology of the name is also often incorrectly given as being derived from ...
