Hyde Park Art Center
The Hyde Park Art Center (HPAC) is a visual arts organization and the oldest Alternative exhibition spaces, alternative exhibition space in the city of Chicago. Since 2006, HPAC has been located just north of Hyde Park Boulevard, at 5020 S.Cornell Avenue, in the Kenwood, Chicago, Kenwood neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. History Beginnings The Hyde Park Art Center, established in June, 1939, was originally called the Fifth Ward Art Center of Chicago, Illinois. In 1940, the name was changed to the Hyde Park Art Center. Its founders, who included future Senator Paul Douglas, consisted primarily of artists and volunteers committed to creating a neighborhood space for the visual arts. The Art Center's first home was a defunct saloon next door to then-alderman Douglas’ constituent office at 1466 E. 57th Street. Kerry James Marshall
Kerry James Marshall (born October 17, 1955) is an American artist and professor, known for his paintings of Black figures. He previously taught painting at the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 2017, Marshall was included on the annual ''Time'' 100 list of the most influential people in the world. He was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, and moved in childhood to South Central Los Angeles. He has spent much of his career in Chicago, Illinois. Bibiana Suárez (born 1960) is a Latin American artist from Puerto Rico. She specializes in painting with mixed media. Thomas Kovachevich
Thomas Kovachevich (born March 11, 1942) is an American contemporary visual artist and physician. Kovachevich's art practice is multi-faceted; exhibitions of paintings, sculptures, installations and performances have represented the lexicon of this artist. Kovachevich earned a B.A. in social science at Michigan State University and received his medical diploma and board certification in Family Medicine at the Chicago Osteopathic School of Medicine where he became inspired by ordinary medical materials and began making small sculptures with tape, cotton balls, suture thread, gauze, glass microscope slides, tissue, etc. In 1971, Kovachevich began his medical practice in Chicago. Robert Amft
Robert Amft (7 December 1916 – 28 October 2012) was a painter, sculptor, photographer, designer born in Chicago. Biography Amft grew up during the Great Depression. After graduating from high school, he worked for a year for the New Deal's Civilian Conservation Corps in the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho before enrolling in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, studying at the Saugatuck Summer School of Painting. He graduated from the School of the Chicago Art Institute, 1939. He entered advertising and publishing design upon graduation and taught at the Ray School in Chicago and the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts. He was a senior book designer for the Language Arts Department at Scott Foresman & Co. Gladys Nilsson
Gladys M. Nilsson (born May 6, 1940) is an American artist, and one of the original Hairy Who Chicago Imagists, a group of representational artists active during the 1960s and 1970s. She is married to fellow-artist and Hairy Who member Jim Nutt. Biography Gladys Nilsson was born to Swedish immigrant parents. Her father was a factory worker for Sunbeam and her mother was a waitress. She grew up on the north side of Chicago and attended Lake View High School, while also attending extracurricular drawing classes. Nilsson later attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she met her future husband, fellow student Jim Nutt. Nilsson and Nutt married in July 1961, and their son, Claude, was born in 1962. Karl Wirsum
Karl Wirsum (1939May 6, 2021) was an American artist. He was a member of the Chicago artistic group The Hairy Who, and helped set the foundation for Chicago's art scene in the 1970s. Although he was primarily a painter, he also worked with prints, sculpture, and even digital art. Early life Wirsum was born in Chicago in 1939. He took up drawing at the age of five, while he was recuperating in hospital over several weeks from a fractured skull. Both his parents died when he was nine years old, after their vehicle collided with a truck; Wirsum escaped unhurt. He attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) on scholarship starting in 1957, obtaining a Bachelor of Fine Arts four years later.
