John Lindley
John Lindley FRS (5 February 1799 – 1 November 1865) was an English botanist, gardener and orchidologist. Early years Born in Catton, near Norwich, England, John Lindley was one of four children of George and Mary Lindley. George Lindley was a nurseryman and pomologist and ran a commercial nursery garden. Although he had great horticultural knowledge, the undertaking was not profitable and George lived in a state of indebtedness. As a boy he would assist in the garden and also collected wild flowers he found growing in the Norfolk countryside. Lindley was educated at Norwich School. He would have liked to go to university or to buy a commission in the army but the family could not afford either. He became Belgian agent for a London seed merchant in 1815. ''Hybanthus floribundus'' ( shrub violet) is a plant in the Violaceae family, found in southern Western Australia, southern South Australia, Victoria and southern New South Wales. ''Hybanthus floribundus'' was first described as ''Pigea floribunda'' in 1838 by John Lindley, but was transferred to the genus, ''Hybanthus'' in 1876 by Ferdinand von Mueller. This taxon name is accepted by most Australian authorities, but not by Plants of the World Online nor VicFlora (both of which authorities consider ''Pigea floribunda'' as the accepted name). It is a perennial shrub, growing from 15 cm to 2 m high. There are four subspecies, three of which have a restricted distribution in Western Australia, while the other is widespread. Hans Melchior (5 August 1894 – 12 March 1984) was a German botanist. Melchior was born in Berlin. He studied botany at Berlin University, became assistant to G. Haberlandt at the Institute for plant physiology and took his doctor's degree with him in 1920. Later he was assistant at the Botanical Museum and Herbarium, Berlin-Dahlem, on 1 October 1920, the beginning of an uninterrupted career at that institute in which he went through all the ranks, ending as interim director (1958–1959), and having been professor of botany from 1940 teaching at Technical University of Berlin. Among his many contributions to taxonomy are his treatments of the Medusagynaceae, Theaceae, Violaceae, and Canellaceae for the second edition of the ''Die Natürlichen Pflanzenfamilien'' of Engler & K. Charles Austin Gardner (6 January 1896 – 24 February 1970) was an English-born Western Australian botanist. Biography Born in Lancaster, Lancashire, Lancaster, in England, on 6 January 1896, Gardner emigrated to Western Australia with his family in 1909, where they took possession of land at Yorkrakine. Gardner showed an interest in art and botany from youth, becoming engrossed in his Western Australian Museum, state museum's copy of Bentham's ''Flora Australiensis'' (London, 1863-78) and received encouragement from the government's botanist Desmond Herbert and botanical artist Emily Pelloe. René Louiche Desfontaines launched de Candolle's botanical career by recommending him at a herbarium.
