Hyannis State Normal School
The Hyannis State Teachers College is a former college located in Barnstable, Massachusetts. It operated under various names from 1897 to 1944. It operated as the Hyannis State Normal School from 1897 to 1932 and the Hyannis State Teachers College from 1932–1944. It used to have a Physical Education program, which was transferred to nearby Bridgewater State College (now University) after its closure. It was forced to close in 1944 due to declining enrollment at the school. During its operation, there was a public elementary school to the east which was constructed to be used alongside the school. Mysteriously, the school burned a few weeks after opening, but it was rebuilt. The building was later replaced by the Hyannis Elementary School a few miles away and the building was torn down. Massachusetts Maritime Academy (Mass Maritime) is a public university in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, focused on maritime-related fields. It was established in 1891 and is the second oldest state maritime academy in the United States. Buzzards Bay is a bay of the Atlantic Ocean adjacent to the U.S. state of Massachusetts. It is approximately 28 miles (45 kilometers) long by 8 miles (12 kilometers) wide. Municipal Group Historic District
The Municipal Group Historic District is a historic district encompassing a cluster of five municipal buildings in the Hyannis village of Barnstable, Massachusetts. Included are the library (c. 1800), old town hall (1926), two buildings currently housing town offices that were originally part of the Hyannis Normal School, and the Crowell/Guyer Barn, a 19th-century structure now used by the local public works department. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. The library is housed in a former residence, built c. 1800, which was owned for many years by the Hallett family. It was purchased in 1908 for use as a library, and continues to fulfil that role, albeit with a modern addition to the rear that greatly expands its capacity.
