The Huron School District 02-2 is a public school district in Huron, South Dakota, United States. It contains four elementary schools, a middle school, a vocational school, Huron High School, two Hutterite colonies and an alternative high school. The school district owns and operated the local arena and the former Si Tanka University sports center. Huron School District is a member of the South Dakota High School Activities Association. It offers special education, Title I, and a large ESL program. The voters in the Huron School District are voting on a $22.165 million bond issue to remodel and add to the current elementary school due to its limited space and poor conditions. Huron, South Dakota
Huron is a city in Beadle County, South Dakota, United States. It is the county seat of Beadle County. The '' Huron Daily Plainsman'', also referred to as the ''Plainsman'', is the newspaper. The first settlement at Huron was made in 1880. The city was named after the Huron Indians. It is currently the eighth largest city in South Dakota, but it once was the fourth. In recent years, Huron's population has once again started to grow after nearly 20 years of stagnation. A welcoming immigration policy coupled with an economic revival in the area has sparked development. A Walmart Supercenter opened in the mid 2000s. Since Walmart's opening more commercial and residential development has occurred with the completion of a new Runnings store (retailer specializing in farm and fleet products), and many new apartments, twin homes and houses. Harold Van Heuvelen
Harold John Van Heuvelen (March 30, 1919 – April 26, 2017) was an American composer and musician known principally for his Symphony No. 1 (opus 7), which was composed during World War II and which premiered 67 years later in 2012. Personal life Van Heuvelen was raised in Huron, South Dakota, the son of Carrie Catherine and Berend Van Heuvelen. Harold Van Heuvelen graduated from Huron High School. He spent a year at Huron College, before enrolling at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, graduating in 1940 with a degree in music. He also received a master's degree in violin performance from the University of Michigan. After the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, Van Heuvelen enlisted in the United States Army and served as a recruiter during World War II, eventually rising to the rank of colonel. The Hart family murders was a murder–suicide which took place on March 26, 2018, in Mendocino County, California, United States.
