Hurles Scales Jr. is a former American professional football defensive back in the National Football League (NFL). He was drafted in the 14th round (355th overall) of the 1973 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals, but he did not see action on the field. He split the 1974 NFL season between the St. Louis Cardinals (seven games played) and the Chicago Bears (one game played). In gridiron football, defensive backs (DBs), also called the secondary, are the players on the defensive side of the ball who play farthest back from the line of scrimmage. They are distinguished from the other two sets of defensive players, the defensive linemen who play directly on the line of scrimmage, and the linebackers, who play in the middle of the defense, between the defensive line and the defensive backs. 1974 NFL Season
The 1974 NFL season was the 55th regular season of the National Football League. The season ended with Super Bowl IX when the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Minnesota Vikings. Players held a strike from July 1 until August 10, prior to the regular season beginning; only one preseason game (that year's College All-Star Game) was canceled, and the preseason contests were held with all-rookie rosters.
