The Huntington Blue Sox were a Mountain States League (1911-1912) and Ohio State League (1913-1914, 1916) minor league baseball team that played during the early 1900s. They were based in Huntington, West Virginia. Players of note include Ernie Alten, Bill Cramer, Lee Fohl, Al Mamaux, Ralph Shafer, Skeeter Shelton, Johnny Siegle, and Dan Tipple. Managers included Ezra Midkiff, Shelton, and Siegle, among others. Ohio State League
The Ohio State League was a minor league baseball league that operated in numerous seasons between 1887 and 1947, predominantly as a Class D level league. League franchises were based in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia. History The first "Ohio State League" was a baseball league in 1887 before changing names to the Tri-State League. Ezra Midkiff
Ezra Millington "Salt Rock" Midkiff (November 13, 1882 – March 20, 1957) was a Major League Baseball third baseman who played in with the Cincinnati Reds and in and with the New York Highlanders (renamed the New York Yankees for the 1913 season). Midkiff was nicknamed "Salt Rock" due to his birthplace of Salt Rock, West Virginia. Major League career Midkiff was 26 years old when he made his Major League debut on October 5, 1909, with the Cincinnati Reds. After spending time in the minor leagues, Midkiff was acquired by the Highlanders from the San Antonio Bronchos of the Texas League in 1912. Midkiff spent 1913 as the starting third baseman for the Yankees, but Fritz Maisel took the job midway through the season, and Midkiff was sold to the minor league Baltimore Orioles in August. Huntington Boosters
The Huntington Boosters were a Middle Atlantic League (1931–1933) and Mountain State League (1937, 1939) minor league baseball team based in Huntington, West Virginia. It was affiliated with the Detroit Tigers in 1932 and 1933 and with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1939. It was the first team to be based in Huntington since the Huntington Blue Sox of the Ohio State League disbanded in 1916. Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Walter Alston played for Huntington in 1936. From 1934 to 1936, the team was known as the Huntington Red Birds and in 1938 it was known as the Huntington Bees. That year, it was managed by Dickey Kerr, while Mike Sandlock and Hank LaManna played for the team. It became the Huntington Aces in 1940.
