County of Manchester is a cadastral unit located in the Australian state of South Australia that covers land both located in the north-east of Eyre Peninsula and to the peninsula's north. It was proclaimed in 1891 and named after George Montagu, 6th Duke of Manchester who was the father-in-law of the Earl of Kintore GCMG, the Governor of South Australia at the time. Iron Knob
Iron Knob is a town in the Australian state of South Australia on the Eyre Peninsula immediately south of the Eyre Highway. At the 2006 census, Iron Knob and the surrounding area had a population of 199. The town obtained its name from its proximity to large deposits of iron ore, most notably Iron Monarch which outcropped prominently from the relatively flat, surrounding landscape. Iron ore mining The name Iron Knob first appeared on pastoral lease maps of 1854. The first mineral claim in the area was pegged by the Broken Hill Proprietary Company in 1897. Mining commenced in 1900. Iron ore was first transported by bullock wagon to Port Augusta, where it was loaded on to 200-ton barges. From 1903, it was transported by rail to Whyalla and ship to Port Pirie where it was used as a flux in the lead smelter there. Whyalla Railway Line
The Whyalla railway line runs from Port Augusta to Whyalla. History The Whyalla line was built primarily to serve the BHP's Whyalla Steelworks. The line was built by the Commonwealth Railways as a standard gauge line being opened on 6 October 1972 by Prime Minister William McMahon. Passenger Services When it opened, the line was served by a daily passenger service from Adelaide to Whyalla operated by CB class railcars. The service was withdrawn in 1975. Lincoln Highway is a highway in South Australia which links the cities of Port Augusta and Port Lincoln located on the east coast of Eyre Peninsula over a distance of . Eyre Highway
Eyre Highway is a highway linking Western Australia and South Australia via the Nullarbor Plain. Signed as National Highways 1 and A1, it forms part of Highway 1 and the Australian National Highway network linking Perth and Adelaide. __NOTOC__ Blanche Harbor is a locality in South Australia located on the east coast of the Eyre Peninsula overlooking Spencer Gulf about north north-west of the Adelaide city centre and about south of the centre of Port Augusta. Its boundaries were created in 1994 for “the long established name” which is derived from nearby bay of the same name. The locality includes the former Douglas Point South Shack Site. Blanche Harbor consists of an extent of low-rise dwellings adjoining a road named Shack Road which extends from Port Augusta West in the north along the coast with Spencer Gulf to localities in the south within the City of Whyalla.
