Hundred Of Bagot (Northern Territory)
The Hundred of Bagot is the cadastral unit of hundred for the city of Darwin, Northern Territory and the city of Palmerston. It includes the Local Government Areas of the City of Darwin, the northern part of the City of Palmerston and part of the north-western edge of the Shire of Litchfield. History Bagot is one of the 14 hundreds that were proclaimed on 14 September 1871 by the Governor of South Australia in the County of Palmerston (although the map below shows 20 hundreds). It is believed to be named after John Tuthill Bagot, who was the Chief Secretary in the Strangways ministry of the Government of South Australia from 1868-1870. The Hundred was enlarged in 1963 when the Governor-General of Australia, William Sidney, 1st Viscount De L'Isle, revoked the Hundred of Sanderson, formerly located to the north of Bagot, and included this into Bagot. Palmerston County is one of the five counties in the Northern Territory of Australia which are part of the Lands administrative divisions of Australia. It contains the city of Darwin. It was proclaimed on 14 September 1871 and divided into hundreds. Cadastral Divisions Of South Australia
The lands administrative divisions of South Australia are the cadastral (i.e., comprehensively surveyed and mapped) units of counties and hundreds in South Australia. They are located only in the south-eastern part of the state, and do not cover the whole state. 49 counties have been proclaimed across the southern and southeastern areas of the state historically considered to be arable and thus in need of a cadastre. Within that area, a total of 540 hundreds have been proclaimed, although five were annulled in 1870, and, in some cases, the names reused elsewhere. All South Australian hundreds have unique names, making it unnecessary, when referring to a hundred, to also name its county (as is done in some land administration systems such as that of New South Wales). Bagot Community
Bagot Community is an Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory of Australia located in Ludmilla, a northern suburb of the city of Darwin. It was established in 1938 as the Bagot Aboriginal Reserve, when the Aboriginal residents were moved from the Kahlin Compound, it was also sometimes referred to as the Bagot Road Aboriginal Reserve. In 1979 it became a self-governing community, administered by an Aboriginal Community Council and known as the Bagot Aboriginal Community, but signposted and commonly known as the Bagot Community. History The Bagot Aboriginal Reserve was established in 1938 (probably under the ''Aboriginals Ordinance 1918'', which allowed for Aboriginal reserves in the NT), when all Aboriginal residents were moved from the Kahlin Compound. William Sidney, 1st Viscount De L'Isle
William Philip Sidney, 1st Viscount De L'Isle, (23 May 1909 – 5 April 1991), known as Lord De L'Isle and Dudley between 1945 and 1956, was a British Army officer, politician and Victoria Cross recipient who served as the 15th Governor-General of Australia, in office from 1961 to 1965. He was the last non-Australian to hold the position. Sidney was born into an aristocratic family and attended Eton College before going on to Magdalene College, Cambridge. He became a chartered accountant, but also joined the Territorial Army. During the Second World War, Sidney served with the Grenadier Guards in France and Italy; he was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1944 for his actions in the Battle of Anzio. Henry Strangways
Henry Bull Templar Strangways (14 November 1832 – 10 February 1920) was an Australian politician and Premier of South Australia. Strangways was the eldest son of Henry Bull Strangways of Shapwick, Somerset, England. As a boy, he visited South Australia, where his uncle Thomas Bewes Strangways was a pioneer. Returning to England he entered the Middle Temple in November 1851 and was called to the bar in June 1856. He went to Adelaide early in the following year, was elected to the South Australian House of Assembly for Encounter Bay in January 1858, and became Attorney-General of South Australia in the First Reynolds Ministry from May 1860 to May 1861. The ministry was then reconstructed and Strangways became Commissioner of Crown Lands and Immigration until October 1861.
